Escape is at hand for Escape is at Hand.
Good song, but I never rated it with those other three, and still don't. "Penguin" is one of the best songs about family and parenting I've ever heard, and the other two are glorious, bona-fide, all-time-classic Hip masterpieces.
I just want to pause a moment and pay respects to "Thompson Girl," which seems to be a sadly overlooked cut even among the die-hards. A charming song with a great conceit - lovers snowed in for the winter - and a lovely, intimate recording of the sort I rather wish the Hip had done more of. It certainly didn't deserve to make the final cut, but it does deserve some sort of eulogy.

It came down to "which song would l least like to listen to RIGHT NOW."
And thank you Killer Whale Tank for spending some time on Thompson Girl. Definitely a little gem of a song that doesn't get discussed all that much, but is just fantastic in its modestness, and immeasurable in its claustrophobic containedness.

I contemplated a vote for either "Lonely From Rock 'n Roll" or "They Checked Out An Hour Ago" (both inferior to the set closer "All Desires Turn Concrete"), but in the end chose to wipe small town Ontario off the map.
My personal final four:
4. Bobcaygeon
3. Escape
2. Emperor
1. Poets
I think you could make a strong case for any of these four being one of the greatest things the Hip has ever written. Social commentary, reflections on both enduring (Emperor) and transient (Escape) relationships, with a bit of Canadiana tossed in. These four are a microcosm of what makes the Hip such a great band.
