Because they're cops, and the cop mentality puts cops first.

For further proof take a peak at the

From the family point of view you wonder why the police allowed this maniac to continue to desecrate the body.
Good point.

But even the family ought to understand that adding a police officer (or mulitple police officers) to the death toll would be even worse than the "further desecration" of their loved one's body....

Call me cynical if you will, but I feel that if the police did something to prevent the suspect from further desecrating the victim's body and got officers killed in the process, the media and the general public would call them heroes and forget about them within 6 months, all the while still complaining that the cops can never do anything right.

Well I wasn't making any assumptions of cops dying or not.. tactical units are trained in matters such as this but that's not what I was getting at.
Marcus brought up what I felt was a good point. It made me think...
Put yourself in their shoes.. imagine if the victim was your son.
Would you be so easy to understand? :?
There's really no right or wrong answer..
Thankfully this is a rare event....

But why aren't you "making any assumptions of cops dying or not"? That's was apparently the reality of the situation here -- the cops were following protocol designed to protect themselves from injury or death. Otherwise, there would have been no "waiting around" for hours on end.
My personal opinion on "acceptable methods" of handling situations like that goes way beyond what society deems as "appropriate". In
my vision of "the way it should be", cops arriving on such a scene are not required to "take custody" of a nutjob like that unless he totally and completely gives himself up. If he does not immediately comply with officers' commands to the letter, then he gets a hot slug in his ear.
End of "standoff".
But given that this isn't how things are, and if my hypothetical son is the victim in such a circumstance, I can pretty much assume that if my question of "what the hell are (were) you cops waitng for?" is answered with "for the elimination of the risk of potential harm to me and my fellow officers", then I'm going to understand. I may not be "satisfied", but I'm going to understand their need to safely do their duty.

For crying out loud.
PETA is the worst of all the crazy activist groups.
I'm going to start a new activist group: PATPM (
People for the
Abusive
Treatment of
PETA
Members)

That is so vile that I cannot find the words. There is something seriously wrong with PETA and their members. I do not understand how people can lessen such a tragedy and compare it to killing animals for food. Piss off, PETA.

PETA thrives on publicity. They will do anything to get their name in the media.
They're best ignored.

I can't believe what i've heard about some Americans criticizing the people on the bus for not doing anything...wtf!?!?!?!?
Sorry we don't all have guns on us...what were they supposed to do...blast the guy with their heat vision?
Buddy didn't have a boxcutter, he had a huge hunting knife, and he knew how to use it.

I find that they're best sauteed in white wine, butter, and garilc, and served on a bed of fresh spring greens with a side of wild mushroom risotto.
