tigerthelion Wrote:Yes, I agree but it's not MAv I have a problem with, it's THE HIP. I know they have families and can accept that but everything has been delayed. They finally released a DVD after saying it was in the works since about 1997. They still haven't announced Canadian cross country tour dates and it's the end of September. Their album was being recorded in January and we have to wait until the middle of October for it. My patience for these delays is running out. Not that I matter that much. I'm just a single fan but still, I have a right to be frustrated.
I'd imagine that there are a lot of people, other than the five guys in The Hip, contributing to the decision making process on all of your issues.

Yeah, but the band has a big say in when they can tour, how soon they want things released, etc......
I understand what you're saying though, Chris, because I kind of sound like the whiners who say "why don't THE HIP every come to my city" all the time. I am just frustrated with the long waits this time, and during the IBE release also.

Mmmmm.... I'm pretty sure that for the last few album releases the Hip have only played one or maybe two shows in a couple of cities. This is definitely not the full Canadian tour, there are going to be more dates later on!
And if I recall, in 2005 they played one show in New Brunswick and one in Newfoundland... not Toronto or Vancouver etc., and they were the only shows that year at all!
They are never going to make everyone happy, but I would say they have made "lots" of fans happy.
And with regards to the album being late, would you rather them release when it's not done or to their satisfaction? I don't think they ever promised that the album would be out in the Spring...

It seems that once we were given a little more insight and advanced notice of what's to come, we started wanting even more, and stopped being thankful for what we get. Sure, it's good business to be accessible but it's not a necessity. I like it the way it is.
And playing a small venue multiple nights in four of the largest markets in the country is also good business... making lots of fans happy in the process.
Lots of fans happy? I wouldn't use the word "lots" but I understand what you're saying. They haven't cut off their fans, they just take forever to tour and get their cd out. Neil Young recorded a cd, mixed it, and had it out to the public in about three weeks.

Well, now I will have more money for Widespread Panic tour..

chris - 09-25-2006
Yes they have a say, but unless the record label is going to finance it, I'd say that there won't be a tour. The Hip say when they
want to tour. The label says when the
will tour.
The Hip say when the want to release an album. The label says when they will release the album. Substitute tour, album, DVD, etc... it's all the same. Music is a business, and the label pays the bills, and signs their paycheques.

Well, this is a really good way to keep any new fans at bay..and some old ones. How many times can they play Toronto without wearing out the fanbase there.
Considering they have a hard time filling up 1,000 seated venues in the states, I'm a little confused by this action. The only thing I can think of is that they are getting tired of the road.

I don't know what the point of your post is. Chris and I were talking about the shows that were just announced, not the full tour to come. The shows they are playing at the Commodore, etc is good business and Chris said it would make lots of fans happy. I just said I wouldn't use the word "lots". It'll make fans in Toronto and Vancouver happy, and the other cities. Hell, they have always made lots of fans happy and even played PEI this past summer but we were talking about these just announced shows.
As far as the album, I'd like them to release it in a timely fashion and not take a year to be satisfied with it. As David Briggs used to say, "The more you think, the more you stink."

The Hip have some clout with Universal. They aren't puppets who tour when they are told.

Well, sorry if I came off a bit harsh.
I love THE HIP, and I am just a little impatient, that's all.

I'm not going to deny that I am dissapointed with this new 'tour'. I think as a fan who has suported the hip for nearly two decades, I am not out of line to have expectations. This 4 city
tour is great if you live in or near them but for the rest of the country it's a real drag. I was shafted the last tour as well when they cancelled their show in Brandon, MB and now here we go again... It just sucks.
Hopefully they'll announce a real Canadian tour soon.

Please explain how this is a good way to keep fans at bay? There are more than 6 million people within an hour and a half of Toronto - there are plenty of fans to sell out 1000 seat venues. (Or 10,000 seat venues!)

Some. They aren't moving units like they once did which means they aren't making as much for the label which means they do not have as much say. We could go on for days like this... I understand your point, and I think you see where I'm coming from, too.

For sure, Chris. Like I said, I'm just impatient and was expecting to see a full tour when I logged on to thehip.com today. I was disappointed because I expected more dates. That's all.

There are approximately 33 million people in Canada.
The population that lives within 125km of each venue they are playing totals approximately 11 or 12 million. I'd be hard pressed to choose four better cities to play.
