A Beautiful Thing is definitely a top three song on IVL. The little solo part is good near the end and the lyrics are fine in my opinion. I think it has a great melody and great flow. "3 o'clock in the morning, You'd better be dying and you were........." It's a GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!
The Rules is a GREAT SONG also!

Jenna_Bird Wrote:Neil, you're only digging this non-friendship pit deeper. I was agreeing with you, word for word, until you revealed your dislike for "A Beautiful Thing". Perhaps its just the memories that the song evokes, but it is only of my favorites. It may not be the tightest song technically, or the most original in terms of lyrics, but I think there are songs that have already been mentioned (like Coconut Cream) that are far less appealing. Just my silly little opinion.

As usual, I overstepped my bounds by simply talking
too long. I'm glad you like The Rules and hate Coconut Cream, though!! We're 2 for 3, and two out of three ain't bad!

I take back my comment about Membership. I was listening to it today and realized that I shouldn't have called it a least favourite. Don't know what I was thinking. I love Gord's bass in Membership.
As far as your list goes, the only two songs I could think of to include in a list of my own would be Coconut Cream and Toronto #4. I love all of the other songs on your list.

What's with the hate for TO #4?? It's come up a few times here - one of my faves. I guess I like quite a few hated ones: Membership, Bastard, Fire, etc.
Butts Wigglin is it for me, though I still have a hard time with Silver Jet (yes, yes, I know you really like it) because it feels so strained. Never got it - the finish of IVL is what saves that album for me.

Damn, that's a good list. I'd have to say your views are more in line with mine than anybody else I've seen here. Fire in the Hole is the most overrated song ever. It's just noise to me.
I would *strongly* disagree about Beat and The Bastard, but 8 out of 10 I wholeheartedly agree with. Nice to see Cream AND Beautiful Thing (which I suggested above) on someone else's list side by side.
In place of Beat and Bastard, I would submit that Train Overnight and Heaven Is A Better Place deserve a spot there.

New Orleans is beat is my favorite track on IBE...i cant believe someone would even suggest it as a bad hip song..
but I suppose people like Tiger the Lion, and that I will ever understand..
good god, subjectivity is a bitch....

I would have to pick anything from In Violet Light...with the exception of Silver Jet.

Okay, our tastes are going to seem even more in line as I think I can meet you halfway, there. I'm listening to
INOIB, and am realizing now that I fashioned that list using my early impressions of IBE. I had it in my mind that
INOIB was just a drag, but I'm listening to it now and I realize that it truly has climbed a couple rungs on the IBE ladder for me - it's actually a rather pretty song. I chose from a pool of about sixteen songs, and amongst those other six songs was
Heaven, so I'll substitute that for INOIB...it feels like a song written for radio airplay by someone other thatn the Hip, lacking artistic substance (musically).
But I remain adamant that
Bastard stays right there - I actually
skip that song almost every time I listen to M@W, and I absolutely love
Train ....it's hard to explain, but it has something to do with the Gibson-like distortion of the guitars (sounds very 'classic'), the cresendo-pitch of the chourus, Bobby's cool little flourishes in his leads (especially after that 2nd chorus), and the overall feeling of solitude I get from the arrangement....seems to reinforce the image of a lone train carving its way through the darkness. And yes, that's a very, very subjective take...

I gotta go with Silver Jet, Heart of the melt, Vaccination Scar, Thompson Girl. No real reason's just don't do much for me.

HipHed - 11-16-2004
Wow ! There are some great songs on the 'hate' list. But, to each his or her own. My least favorite is fireworks, but that's because it was the only Hip song that my ex-girlfriend liked. The ONLY hip song......can you believe that???

Problem Bear - 12-04-2004
So I keep having this recurring nightmare. I'm showing my girlfriend the Hip for the first time. I pay $110 for two tickets, travel for eight hours to see the show, and the setlist that night is:
Springtime in Vienna
All Tore Up
On the Verge
Lionized
Daredevil
Membership
Sharks
Wild Mountain Honey
The Rules
Butts Wigglin'
Let's Stay Engaged
Encore:
Werewolf
Surf Club
Evelyn
Then I wake up screaming.
It's a testament to the Hip (and to subjectivity) that, for some of you, this would no doubt be a spectacular night. I'll look for the Best Songs thread tomorrow and post my dream setlist.
Cheers,
John
