The Zidane headbutt was just insane. I thought the Figo thing was terrible against England, but that was just ridiculous.

I'm dying for the he said she said version of what transpired between Zinedine and Materazzi; my early money is also on something racist, which would be a shame, and as an Italian-Canadian, I'd be pleased to be wrong.

But the game was great!! The demons of 1994, 1998, and 2000 were vanquished, and I thought it was poetry that Trezeguet (the villain of the piece in 2000, if you're an Italy fan) was the guy who missed the penalty, rocketing it off the bar -- and staying OUT this time, unlike Zidane's off-the-crossbar marker earlier in the game on what should not have been a penalty. Somewhere Roberto Baggio sleeps a little easier tonight.

Gotta say though, penalty kicks are a rough way to end it. They should play till they drop. And keep adding player or subtracting players, or take the keepers out, or something, till somebody scores.

The Italians were outplayed in the game big time. Tough call on the Zidane penalty shot, watching it at full speed like the Ref has to do, it was clearly a penalty, it balanced out anyway because the other take down in the box was clearly a penalty and it wasn't called.

anyway, congrats to the Italians, good shooting in the shootout.

i partly agree, the Italians had the game in the first half but were definitely outplayed the second half. And like you said, although the first penalty was not deserved, the second was.

I loved what the French coach had to say: something about Mattarazi being such a big guy that he was amazed to see him knocked over by a gust of wind.

I guess they haven't invented the instant replay in France.

The PK given in the 1st half WAS a foul. There's a camera angle that clearly shows Materazzi knocks Malouda's right foot (but not much) which then hits into his left foot causing him to go down.

The PK not given in the 2nd half was also a foul. I didn't think so at first but the replay clearly shows Malouda was fouled again. The referee was too far away, didn't have a good angle, and probably didn't want to call another pk. Zidane would have scored that one too - final France 2 Italy 1. The headbutt would not have happened.

Normally you just see players run near them and they go down faster than a $10 hooker..

Materazzi reportedly told Zidane some spoliers for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which Zidane had intended to go and see when he got home from the World Cup. 'I'll give you dead man's chest, you insensitive prick,' Zidane reportedly told the Italian before lashing out.

Don't believe that for a second Zenith... if that's been the case Zidane would've booted him while he was down too...

Thats true actually. I've heard that Zidane is suprisingly passionate about his pirate based, Hollywood blockbusters.

However, it might explain the Rooney incident though.

Rooney was going for the part of Shrek in Shrek 3, the Portugues players told him that he had missed out on the part... Ronaldo merely pointed out to him that he wasn't green enough.
