Weezer charges somewhere in the 200k area for corporate gigs.
This figure can't be right. They charged about 45 bucks for their concert in Saint John last year, which I doubt drew anymore than 3000 at the MOST. And why such a low price for booking Blue Rodeo compared to The Hip?
It's all relative to market and other shows in the area.

For instance, a sold out show (18,000) at the ACC @ $50 ticket is considerably more than $250K . . . and doing a show in a US city venue that holds 500 isn't the same either. Lots of variables to be considered. Routing, population of the area, travel distance, history, etc, etc. The show at the Commodore will be very special and certainly worth the ticket price . . . it's also reasonable to believe that they are taking less of a guarantee as it is the beginning of their spring/summer tour.

Fort York holds 6500 x 2, Guelph Island 5000 (I believe) and Artpark is roughly 4500 . . . all sold out in minutes . . . add Pittsburgh's "free" concert, which the City would be paying them to play at and that works out to 5 shows in 8 days . . . not a bad run. The math makes sense. It would also make sense that you would pay more for a "one off" than being set into a tour scenario.

Lots to consider.
Motorhead WITH Anthrax was only 35,000 when they were on tour a couple years back...and that's for two of the best metal bands ever!
at the least for those two bands in a tour cycle, it would be $35K guarantee plus % of overage (80%-90%)
The Motorhead concert in Saint John was cancelled due to low ticket sales.
But that may be saying more about Saint John than Motorhead.
hence the low guarantee . . .

3000? Really? When I saw the Hip in Saint John in 1999 I'm guessing there were about 7000-8000 fans. Have they lost that much popularity? Maybe I'm estimating too high but I know it was quite a lot more than 3000 fans.
This has to be all corporate rates. The band gets paid nothing to play venues in the states, I can promise you that.
Does it really matter, or is it any of our concern what they get paid?

This month's Toronto Life said Gord Downie made $200,000 last year; should this change my attitude toward the band or their music?
$200k? I'm shocked, I thought for sure that number would've been higher. but I guess they didn't tour, but they did release the greatest hits. I wonder what the number is during a touring/new album year?
Comparing the rate for a club in the US and an Canadian arena show is like comparing apples to oranges. There are so many logistical and technical differences it is unfathomable.

They don't tour the states to make money...they tour to expand the fan base. I doubt they even break even after all costs are accounted for. They make money in Canada.
After I won the lotto, I built a huge amphetheater in my backyard...

It really does not matter at all, and it is truly none of our concern what they get paid. However, I do think that it is fascinating information and something that a lot of people think about. These guys have dream "jobs" and it is just human nature for some of us to ponder the wealth and lifestyle that go along with rock star status. But you've got a good point...its about the music not the cash. Its good thing that the Hip typify that notion.

Seems about right to me Chris. They would have made more back in the day when they were selling more albums and playing more shows. I'd be pretty happy with $200000 for something I love to do.
