They sounded OK, actually... pretty good even. I'm not the biggest Stones fan, but they have some really good songs and are pretty legendary, so I respect them. I tried not to look at the screen directly when they were playing, however, because the sight of dancing skeletons in leather doesn't really appeal to me.
The funny thing is, someone wrote somewhere (and damn if I can remember who or where!) that he guaranteed that the Stones would perform Start Me Up, some new song from a new album no one's heard of and no one has bought, and Satisfaction, in that order. And damned if that guy wasn't right!!!

actually the new song, and the new album have been the most successful stones sales in some time...critics really like "a bigger bang" as well..and i'm not a huge stones fan either, but i like the new stuff, but thought they sounded like shit last night

Actually i only hope wish and pray that our beloved Hip have the scruples to hang it up before they look like skeleton-marionettes with jowels.
Just because the Stones still "can" (which is debatable in itself) doesn't mean they
should.
Really.
people are saying they werent even playing, I disagree! You cant sound that bad and be faking it. Who gave Ron Wood a slide??
"you guys are some fussy picky bitchy motherfuckers sometimes....F U C K!"
:rambo: :rambo: :rambo: :rambo:
I will bitch, and I will pick, and I will even give a low moan ~
but that shit just plain out STANK
Wow, someone happens to disagree with and you blow up, just relax. Go stare at your Rob Baker pictures some more.

"Blow up"? A little bit of an over-exaggeration there, don't you think?
Looks to me like she just responded in kind.
My bad, I didnt know she was quoting TDC, I didnt see the first page I went right to the second. And there was no quote box.
SORRY GRACE!!
I agree, sound was failry crappy on tv, but that wasn;t the bands fault, it was the mixing........
I was a bit surprised though, I thought that being in Detriot and all the contoversy over mowtown being ignored, I thought for sure thet would play Ain't To Proud To Beg........
In all honestty, I am a huge Stone fan and thought they pulled it off failry well, especially when you realise that they are grandparents and great graparents! Hell, I hope when I am 60+ I will have that much energy.
I have seen the Stones in concert 5 times now, and without a word of a lie, the Licks tour and the Bigger Bang tour, they have not sounded that good since the 1980/81 Tattoo You tour.
Flame me if you want, the Ths Stones are not just a rock and roll band, they are rock and roll period.

It's that whole "jump the shark" thing, isn't it?
On the other hand, the Hip have never had the same public persona that the Stones have had. Mick's always been sold as a bit of a sex symbol and that's a hard act to keep up into your 60s and beyond. Except for AndGraceToo's appreciation for Rob Baker, I've never heard anyone proclaim any of the Hip bandmembers as sexy.
AndGraceToo - We'll just have to wait to see if Rob will be able to maintain his sex symbol status...

Oh, I agree. The Stones personify the rock'n'roll myth. They've never been about the music. If they were, they wouldn't have lasted as long as they have. I liken them to Harley Davidson motorcycles - it's the brand, not the product.

Right. Kinda like MTV.
Personally, I'm
all about the music, which is why my love for the Stones is pretty much limited to
Exile on Main Street,
Let it Bleed, and select cuts from the other 187 Stones records....

Personally, I think Keith Richards look more bad ass every year..
I don't think it has anything with how old they are. I mean, David Bowie just keeps getting better. And why is that? Because he's evolved.
The Stones are sticking to the same schtick that they've been doing
since the cheesy 80's and it's old. I mean, even Kiss took the make up for awhile..but they put it back on, cause..???..It was the schtick that people wanted to see, and now they are officially washed up.
If they went back to their blues roots, that would have been cool.
Considering the show was in Detroit..
Grace Slick even said the last thing she wants to see on stage is a
bunch of 60 year old "rockstars"

I have to say that the Rolling Stones are a rock band, who from day 1, have sought to make a living by entertaining people. Last night they performed in front of perhaps their biggest audience ever. Whether you were entertained or not is subjective.
I don't think they embarassed themselves, I think they did their job... a job they've done better than anybody else for 40 years.
The Hip have done half time gigs, I don't have a problem with that. A gig is a gig is a gig.
The Stones didn't need the money, so it wasn't "selling out," in fact I think "selling out" is a myth perpetuated by people who believe their favourites must maintain some ridiculous purity while ignoring the world around them and refusing to make money from their gifts.
Good on ya Mick, long may you run.
