well..it had to be brought up eventually, and i'm bored at work so i thought why not today....
1. Robert Plant "mighty rearragner"...proving that he doesn't need Jimmy to make a "zep-esque" brilliant album...plant as only he can do mixes world beats, techno rhythm, zep guitars..and his best work since the seventies..he's sounding better than ever, the new songs were mind blowing live, and he looks so friggin happy with his new band...ten out of ten!!..songs to check out "let the four winds blow" "takamba" "all the kings horses" "the enchanter"
2. Fiona Apple "extraordinary machine"..well worth the six year wait..there's nobody like her...she hits notes on this cd that just kill me...the passion in which she sings...i just hope it's not another six years between albums...songs to check out.. "please please please" "get him back" "extraordinary machine" "window"
3. White Stripes "get behind me satan"...in what could have been a guitar driven "let's make the masses happy" album, is the complete opposite..and thank god...these 2 never fail to amaze me, and from start to finish it's a wild ride....
4. Queens of the Stone Age "lullabies to paralyze"...from the opening notes sung by Mark Lanegan, this is an instant Rock classic..they're often called stoner rock, which i think is an unfair label..true, a little green wouldn't hurt your listen, but songs In My head, and burn the witch are great all on their own...a very exciting listen....
ok..so as i'm posting this, something has come up..must return to this later!!!!

The top five and then the honourable mentions
1 - Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have it So Much Better -- This is how to record and release a second record. Do it quickly enough where your music doesn't change enough to have people forget while they fell in love with you, but let's the world know that the best is yet to come. "Do You Want To" is my vote for single of the year, across all genres. I haven't heard a song this radio friendly since Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You". "Elleanor Put Your Boots Back On" shows that while this boys can make you dance your ass off, they also can let you sway with your baby when he nightclub closes.
2 - The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan -- By far their best effort. From the almost ragtime nature of "My Doorbell" to the stalking of Rita Hayword in "Take Take Take" (a great little metaphor), Jack White bares his soul in an album that shows he's maturing as a songwriter and that him and Meg are becoming better musicians as time goes on. Bonus points for the length of time it took to write and record. Coldplay's "X&Y" was about 5 months old when the Stripes went in to record, and both albums were released the same day.
3 - Stereophonics - Language Sex Violence Other? -- Again, another album from this year featuring a band's best work. The firing of Stewert gave Kelly Jones the muse he needed to change things up, with new arraingements and ways of writing music. His knack for storytelling is still unparralled by a lot of modern rock acts, like the tale of love lossed in "Dakota", but the songs are louder, catchier, and that much better than the output of "You Gotta Get There" and even "JEEP".
4 - Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins -- If you haven't caught Of Montreal, you should. From Athens, Georgia, they're a band that's hard to pin down; kind of like Franz, but with indie-cred. If you're a fan of smart pop music, occationally enhanced by the synth, then you owe it to yourself to get this album. Also on the list for having the lyric of the year, "you freed me from the past / you fucked the suburbs out of me".
5 - Holy Fuck - Holy Fuck -- Drums, Bass, four toy keyboards, a 35 mm film synth, and a projection screen in the background that flashed "Holy Fuck" all night. That was my introduction to them at NXNE. Their debut self titled record might not be as magical as their show (although pump me full of Steamwhistle, turn the lights out, give me the blonde I was with and push play, and we might be onto something), but boy, does it rock. It's great music for the club, a great album to drive to, and the kind of thing that could be studied by musicologists in about 50 years. Few people have mastered the 35 mm synth as well Brian Brochedt (forgive the spelling).
The Honourable Mentions:
Sarah Harmer - I'm A Mountain -- just a beautiful record
Most Serene Repubic - Underwater Cinematographer - from Milton, the latest signing on Arts and Crafts, live up to their collegues such as Stars and BSS on this debut.
Ryan Adams - Jacksonville City Nights -- his 2nd of 3 albums this year, and from all advance press, the final one, out Dec 20, is the best.
Metric - Live it Out -- A solid follow up that shows that this is more than a side-project; they mean business.
The Decemberists - Pictueresque -- Drawing comparisons to Death Cab, this is a record of loungey, country folk epics.
All in all, a great year for music.
Cheers
Pat

same here...what a great cd, and a great live show as well
I knew I'd forget somebody. But looking back its been a solid year for releases, lots of great stuff, just imagine if the Hip's or Pearl Jam's new album made the cut, yikes! Gives us some great stuff to look forward to next year, a new Hip album always gets me excited! :jump
[quote="BulletRiddled"]1. Clutch - Robot Hive: Exodus
Yes! Yes, yes, yes, YES!!! Clutch is nothing if not FRIGGIN BRILLIANT.
Also, I really highly recomend the new Sleater Kinney, Iron and Wine and !!! albums (yes that's actually the name of a band).
i also forgot Gomez "out west" a fantastic live cd, and colin james "Limelight"
Weezer's-Make Believe was pretty good also...just thought I'd throw it out there. I think thats it for me, not much else I was crazy about really. Makes me wonder, what year was the best year ever for album releases? Thats a tough one, if I wasn't so lazy I'd try and figure it out.

Forgot about the new Dandy's disc this year as well. Probably should be in that list somewhere.
Weezer was definitly the biggest letdown for me this year. Just very...meh
