My spring and summer 2005 have been bettered by the recent efforts of Green Day and Audioslave. Anybody else into these records? "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Be Yourself" are serious winners. Album(s) of the year.
I'm a massive audioslave fan..they've made another solid album...However, I feel that 'doesn't remind me' was a bad choice for a second single.
I've got American Idiot and Out of Exhile. Very good discs for sure. I don't think the new Audioslave is as good as their first disc though.

I've been listening to Andy Stochansky's album 500 which comes with a bonus live cd of a 2004 show recorded at the El Mocombot. Another album which is really rocking for me this year is the double Foo Fighters album In Your Honor. It's been discussed in another Thread, but the new Trews album is a must have!!
Im so sick of hearing about Green Day, everybody is swooning over american idiot like its Led Zeppelin IV or something.. Sorry but I just dont get it, every song sounds alike and its nothing that far removed from the last 4 or 5 albums they made. Everytime a GD song is on the radio I have no clue which one it is, they all sound the same. As for album of the year, the year isnt over yet but what about the Foo Fighters? Hell the rock disc alone is better than Amer.Idiot. Coldplay's X+Y is awesome, what abut QOTSA? Lullibies to Paralyze is a killer cd. And we still have a Pearl Jam album on the way, so Green Day can lick on that [imo] :rambo: Sorry dame Im just sick of hearing about GD and this thread was the last straw for me, Im sorry it had to be you. Smile
I am definately loving both these records....Green Days especially. American Idiot is a solid disc and I can listen to it straight through without skipping any tracks. I agree that Audioslave's first disc is better but this new one is still very enjoyable. It sucks I won't be in town with they come to Winnipeg in October. It would have been something else to hear some Soundgarden and RATM songs live....which I've heard they do on occassion.
For the most part I'm with LizardKing on this one. I don't dislike Green Day at all, I just find they are extremely overhyped and each disc and song sounds the same as the next.
american idiot is nothing like green day cd's in the past...every band has a "sound", don't get me wrong..i'm sure a lot people think all hip songs sound the same..but green day has come a long way since dookie..american idiot is well written, thoughtful, political, amazing melodies..and quite simply put..the album of 2004...as for this year, i think QOTSA might have a lock on that...or Robert Plant....

and as for overhyped bands whose songs all sound the same?? COLDPLAY!!!!!!!!
Yeah, the Foo's "In Your Honour" is great too. But it fades in and out of my memory since I had to donate 12 litres of blood just to afford it.

I feel just the opposite about Green Day and Coldplay. Can't get enough of Green Day, just love the new album, but Coldplay doesn't do it for me: too uninspired and needy, sounds like they write songs for critics and Rolling Stone. IMO they aren't doing anything Elton John or that guy with the "Bittersweet Symphony" song haven't already done.

exactly...there's just something not passionate about coldplay for me...i tried to like them, i wanted to like them..but..jeez..are they ever boring..everytime i have to play one of their songs at work, it just seems to bring down the whole show...
love every disc mentioned so far,saw green day in may and came away totally not thinking that its all hype- they were superb... i`ll be seeing audioslave & qotsa in the coming months so i am hoping both of those shows will kick my ass as well
Lizard, I agree about Green Day. I used to like them back in the day. I can't speak for the whole disc but the three songs I heard I DO NOT LIKE. They sound like RADIO POP SONGS to me. That "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" makes me want to punch a hole in the wall. I hate it.

As for Coldplay, I'm with Dame and Opiated on this one. It just sounds like Chris Martin listened to U2 and Radiohead a little too much to the point that he felt he had to TRY TO SOUND EXACTLY LIKE HE THOUGHT IT WOULD SOUND LIKE IF THE TWO BANDS MIXED. Dame, good point on playing for the critics. It does sound like Coldplay are trying to make records that Rolling Stone hails as "the best record since OK Computer" or something. Their music just seems a little too unnatural.

Of course these are only my personal opinons and I realize most people here love Green Day and Coldplay. Peace out.
i would take green day over the trews any day of the week
My album of the year award goes to the Kings of Leon (Aha Shake Heartbreak).

Honourable mentions:
Lullabies to Paralyze
Cold Roses (Ryan "Don't Call Me Bryan" Adams & The Cardinals)
Face the Truth (Stephen Malkmus)
Nashville (Josh Rouse)

Most Disappointing:
The Future Embrace (Billy Corgan).
It seems with Coldplay you love em or hate em, and thats cool. I like their sound, I like music with lots of piano and mellow sounds, and they are very good at it. Funny thing is Im not a big U2 fan and I hate everything Radiohead has done since the Bends (ok computer was ok). And its not like I just all of a sudden started diggin CP because its the "in" thing to do, I had parachutes the day it was released and have been a big fan since. Im just sick of hearing about Green Day and having them forcefed to me on the radio and on tv, everyday, enough is enough.

*My early pick for album of the year goes to......

The White Stripes-Get Behind Me Satan!!

But Im a huge Stripes fan so Im biased as hell. Big Grin

*and lets not forget Pearl Jam is on the way..
