wow, hitting form behind, you're a real tough guy aren't you

guess what? the fans aren't there to please the band, it's the other way around. btw, you know what happened to the guy at the Sudbury Bluesfest that tried to start a fight? he got bootfucked by a half dozen guys and then he crawled away, do you really want to be that guy? I would think Gord and the boys look down on people punching fans in the back of the head more than they do flag-waving...
Ponch Wrote:I think we are a rare breed amoung young fans, but if you ask any 28-36 Canadian music fan who their favorite band is, and 90% will say The Tragically Hip.
Sorry, but I have to disagree. It'd be nowhere near 90%.

Dude :thumb: I owe you a beer next Hip Show. It's funny, at the shows it's all people like us, here its a different crowd...maybe we just don't notice all these 'take it easy at the show' fans cause they're all getting puked on behind big ass flags!

wow, now you resort to name calling and threats. classy, sir, classy

It's a give and take relationship between the band and the fans, in my view. The band shouldn't have to please rowdy, belligerent fans who may like the music but go to the concerts to get drunk and go raging. This is why I tend to like jam bands; everybody is generally mellow and grooving to the music (I know, how odd for a conservative Repub to sound like a Grateful Dead love child  ). And bootfucking is a real classy way to deal with an idiot who's looking to start a fight. Ever heard of a concept called restraint?
right on man, don't worry, hardcore anything fans are annoying (case in point me with the Yankees, Habs, or Dolphins...am I right people?), i mean i consider myself somewhat of a hardcore hip fan, as the're my favourite band, i own all of their albums, and i've seen them live a few times, but on the other hand, i don't obsess over their every word, or make it my life long goal to own every single bootleg, and drive around the continent following them to hear essentially the same setlist 25 times. i'm much happier to wait a few years in between seeing them live and then "let it out, let it all out" when the time comes , i think what i love most about concerts (other than the music of course) is their unpredictable nature, the chaos, being there and knowing that anything can happen, a fight could break out, a crowd surfer could come crashing down on you, a mosh pit could break out, the crowd might start a funny chant, a beach ball might come your way, a stranger might buy you a beer or smoke you a joint, you might hook up with an attractive person of the opposite sex (or in some of your cases the same sex Tongue) you just never know what's gonna happen, and i lfind that exciting. rock concerts are supposed to be a little bit dangerous, it's "sexy as hell". sometimes i think that some of you people get so into trying to be the biggest/best hip fans that you forget that everyone there is there to have a good time regardless of the setlist, or how rowdy it gets, or if a flag gets in their way, or w/e, IT'S ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN! IF YOUR IDEA OF HAVING FUN IS STANDING STILL THEN GO RIDE AN ELEVATOR AND HUM "MY MUSIC @ WORK" TO YOURSELF OK!

1) the band should have to please every single person who paid for a ticket...

2) guess what? at a hip show here in Canada the rowdy ones are the majority, i dunno how it is in the USA, but we get a little overly-passionate about the hip here, the drunkeness plays a hand in that, but i like to think that it has more to do with the hip kicking ass more than anything.

3) go see your "jam" bands then and have fun with it, nobody's stopping you, nobody's harassing you because that's your idea of having fun, so don't be so hypocritical, just let everybody do their own thing and don't be so damn judgemental, jeez,

4) i wasn't threatening anyone, i was just stating what i'd seen happen to a guy that tried to start a fight at a hip show, the guy was looking for a fight, and he got it, just not quite what he had in mind though methinks

5) I'm from Sudbury, and when somebody tries to beat up one of your friends, you bootfuck 'em, straight up, and then maybe next time they'll think twice about it, if not, you can always feed em the boots again
You're right, except surely by "Habs" you meant "Leafs"

Green Day aren't doing anything the Clash haven't already done... ie LONDON CALLING.
Yes, this is off topic, but it had to be said.

not true...london calling is a great song, but have you listened to the entire american idiot cd?? brilliant...
I'm talking about the LP London Calling... the whole album. It will blow your mind, and put Green Day to shame.

i own both albums, in fact i have the anniversary edition of london calling, complete with DVD...honestly, i think american idiot stands beside it as an equal..if not better....
Then why did you say "london calling is a great song, but have you listened to the entire american idiot cd??"

I'm callin' bullshit. Adding that you own "the anniversary edition of london calling, complete with DVD" just affirms it.

just affirms what asshole? it's a 2 cd set, with dvd..i own it..i own american idiot as well..you wanna butt in on this fine..but we agreed to disagree..and now you spout off your mouth? i'm sorry i said great song..i thought that's what he meant...sorry it upset you i didnt' say album...but you can bite me if you wanna call bullshit..go right ahead...
joanie Wrote:You're right, except surely by "Habs" you meant "Leafs"
mmm, no, i'm pretty sure i meant Habs, i don't think I've ever gotten the two mixed up, I only get the Jays and Yankees mixed up (Tongue @ C-diddy!),but that's forgivable, what with them both off to a good start this year, and their identical records

um 8) .

Affirms it even more.

As for flag-waving, "I love my country too much to be a nationalist." Like Albert Camus, who said that, God bless him.

ok..whatever..i don't need to prove to you i own a cd...why you would doubt me is mind-boggling...being honest, i didn't pay for the cd..it was free through my work (you gonna doubt i work at a radio station now?).however..i do enjoy the album, the dvd, and the band...
Sheesh, what a degenerate thread.

The trouble with the Hip is that they're a symbol as well as an act. When an act becomes a symbol---as, say, with Bruce Springsteen---it naturally attracts a lot of people who go to concerts more to affirm whatever the act is thought to 'stand for' (Canadian nationalism/community in the Hip's case; American nationalism/community in Bruce's), in addition to the standard crop of clowns who go there because they remember some of the old hits from drunken parties gone by. So the 'bozo' portion of the audience is doubled.

There's actually something uniquely pathetic about someone who hasn't bought the last three Hip records but goes to a show and waves a flag and pukes, etc. Not only is a great band being reduced to a symbol, but the symbol is pure nostalgia. Meanwhile, some great shit is being played out before their ears, and they're oblivious.

What's really too bad is that Gord's most stinging address to his nationalist constituency---The Dark Canuck---was ignored because the Hip were 'passe' exacept as a nostalgia act to drunken frat boys by that point. Ah well.
Ponch Wrote:But this is specific to Hip fans, or rock fans in general?!?! Because I have been to many rock concerts and rowdy drunkenness is certainly not specific to Hip fans.

And flag waving is something else we really do not want to discourage. Correct?!?!

So what else is there?

I got reamed here on Hipbase for launching into this issue as a "newbie". Well, actually, I got reamed for drawing a parallel between the boorish, overstated nationalism on display at Hip shows and similar attitudes on this board, but it just so happened that the anti-american sentiment was especially high on the forum at the time, I guess. I regret making that association, because this forum deserves better.

However, I can assure you that some of the exploits of "patriotism" I have witnessed at Hip concerts is, in fact, specific to a contingent of Hip fans. I've been to hundreds of concerts for many different acts, and easily as many sporting events, and I assure you that I have *never* seen such recklessness, carelessness, and insensitivity on display by any one group trying to draw attention to their nationalism. Especially early in The Hip's career - I remember going to some Ohio shows in the early nineties with a few friends where it was seriously like watching a bunch of six-year-olds crawling all over each other screaming "look at me mommy...LOOK AT ME!" The first time we witnessed it we just traded quizzical looks and asked each other "what the fuck?"

Don't get be wrong, I realize that the percentage of Canadian Hip fans who act in such way is a minority, but 'it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the whole bushel' as they say.

The sad part is that the idiots whose behavior earned that reputation for Hip fans everywhere got an official pardon from Gordie himself this weekend, as he took the fall for the beer-spilling flag wavers out there:

"Hate the band, hate me, but don't hate the fans, it makes you sound like a fucking fascist."

Or, Gordie, maybe it makes you sound like someone who hates poor concert etiquette?
