I long ago gave up the notion of giving a shit what anyone else thinks about my admiration and adoration for the Hip. Back in the early and mid 90's, I used to get offended if someone dissed them and couldn't grasp why anyone wouldn't like them on some level. My wife loathes the Hip, and I have even dragged her to 2 concerts. Now I am at the age where I feel very privileged and special to have followed and grown with this band over the past 16 years.

Sure there are moronic fans, but as has been mentioned, they clearly aren't unique to the Hip. I have never been puked on or even pushed around any more than one might expect if you're up close at a large concert. The rowdiest fans I have ever seen have been at 54-40 concerts in the early and mid 90's.

It makes me feel good to know Gord has "stood up" for us, but it isn't important to me what anyone thinks about us fans.

Alright... maybe I'm a little lost here (being way down yonder), but from what I gather, Gord said something to the effect of "hate me, hate the band, but don't hate the fans"...
So my question is: who hates us and why?
I probably missed something somewhere, but I don't give a rat's ass if you listen to Green Day, RHCP, the Clash, Garth Brooks, or F-ing Barry Manilow.
I like the hip becuase I connect with it on some level. The songs are catchy. I feel it's "intelligent rock" - where I learn a little something about Hockey or Canada or Tom Thompson or Terry the runner guy with one leg. (I had no idea who that guy was until I read Stephen's article).
I feel I connect with the band and the audience when I'm at a live show. I've never seen a fight at a live show - and everyone leaves the arena/club with a smile on their face.
I like the Hip because my first real concert was at the old Aud in B-lo back when I was in 10th grade and the first words I ever heard at a live show was "he said I'm Tragically Hip" and I knew that hour and a half would change my musical tastes for life.
I constantly yearn for MORE music from the boys so I can learn more obscure facts and tidbits about Canadian culture, Hockey, and 16th century conquistodors.
So if you like Green Day or Barry Manilow or even Avril - good for you. I'm sure you have your reasons. I don't "hate" fans of any genre of music - I just disagree with their tastes.
Hey - we are all here because we DO like the band, and that is our common bond.
So if I were Gord I would rephrase my statement to "hate me, hate the band, hate the fans if you want... It's not gonna stop us, you fucking fascists!" and then I say something about politics and getting laid. Or something.

Me thinks that Gord was making reference to the dislike the big record labels have towards artists who refuse to accept their demands for catchy and more marketable "hits" and the fans who support their efforts. The big record labels take the fans more or less for granted and have made sneering reference over the years to intelligent music fans as "hopeless" because they demand meaningful and thoughtful music. The Hip were instrumental in opening up my taste in music towards eclectic artists and I owe them a life long debt of gratitude for doing so.

if a hip concert isn't the right place to get drunk and rowdy, and maybe even wave a flag, i don't know where is (other than at a Canada Day clebration, which only comes once a year, and a Team Canada hockey game...which we don't even get every year!)! i thought rock concerts were all about letting loose and having fun? right? if you're idea of having fun is to be drunk, sing along, and wave a flag, then do it! don't let some snob tell you that it's not acceptable behaviour, because they didn't pay for your ticket, and they're not in any position to tell you anything...besides, if somebody has nothing better to do at concert than to look down at people who are having fun, and to criticize them for doing so, then what the hell are they doing their in the first place? they should stick to dvd's, or reserved seating (although the rowdiness often spills over into reserved seating when the hip's involved :mrgreen, in my experience, bands that rock as hard as the hip do live tend to cause audiences to get rowdy. the day the hip can't do that anymore is that day they should stop touring IMO (don't worry though, we all know that the hip are gonna keep on rockin' for at leat another 20+ right?)!

if you wave a flag in front of me it blocks my view that i paid for. And since you know that the band hates it, then why bother offending them? I dont care if you want to get drunk and not remember the concert you paid for (idiots!), but block my view and i'll punch you in the back of the head :mrgreen:

That kind of behavior anywhere detracts from other peoples' viewing pleasure. How would you like it if some drunk, rowdy dumbass Red Sox fan (they are as numerous as drunk, rowdy dumbass Yankee fan but more colorful and hilarious than Yankee fans :mrgreen: ) stood in front of you at Yankee Stadium and started acting like a tool? The point of a concert is to enjoy the band and the music, not enjoy the concert in your own mind by being beligerent and foolish.
