I don't think they are past their prime, but I'd like them to quit before they do get past their prime, kind of like Phish. It will hurt, but I'd rather them quit then fade away.

It is difficult for me to think of a band that is less similar to the Hip than KISS. KISS is about marketing and groupies. They are the light-metal version of a boy band. They don't dance, but they put on ridiculous costumes and even more ridiculous makeup. The "music" is secondary.
The Hip exist to create awesome music. KISS exists to suck every last dollar out of their fans. What year are we in of the "farewell" tour? Seven? Eight?

I'll start by saying, no, KISS and the Hip have nothing in common other than both make music. (and from the responses so far, even that comparison is questionable to some)
Now, call KISS whatever you like, but as a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's, I was completely in awe of the band. It wasn't even so much the music, although I went through a KISS phase in grade 9-10, it was more their presence. I completely hung up my KISS albums, so to speak, when I first discovered Led Zeppelin, in around 87ish, and never bothered to play them again.
I saw them for the first reunion tour in 96 in Saskatoon and they completely blew me away...it was larger than life and I had one of the best concert experiences to date. I had somewhat of a rekindling with the band, and was reminded of why I liked them so much as a kid/teenager.
You can call them marketing whores if you like, but at least they aren't shy about it. They know what their fans want, and they deliver it.
To echo what some others have said, consider the source and take the poll for what it's worth: absolutely nothing. There are always people, who for whatever sad reason, enjoy being shit disturbers while telling themselves that they're independent-thinking rebels. Most of these folks fade away after high school, the remainder end up on radio.
I just checked the link and the poll is “Who’s got the better tan? Michael Stipe or Iggy Pop.” So we’re talking about some serious thinkers and music fans here people. Forget them.
But now that I’m already babbling….
There are music "fans" that expect every Hip song to be NOIS Parts II-X and are actually disappointed when confronted with a band that is growing and evolving with each album. Have I loved every Hip song I've heard over the past 19 years? No, of course not. But it has been an awesome ride and I hope it continues for another 19. Why the hell shouldn’t it?
Neil Young is still kicking ass and taking names after 40 or so years in the music biz. Sure he had some weird moments in the 80s, but then he came out with Freedom and Ragged Glory. In Between Evolution is a great album and I look forward to the next one and the following ten.
Joe
P.S. Don’t forget the B-sides/unreleased box set damnit!

If you like the band, that's fine. To each his own. However, I completely disagree with the sentiment that
They know what their fans want, and they deliver it. I think their attitude is more: how can we line our pockets more and extract every last penny from our fans with merchandise and gimmicks? There's a big difference between "giving the fans want they want" and trying to suck as much money out of them as possible.
Yeah, the Hip have been slow to get a DVD out, but I'll take a killer CD and tour every two years over some never ending "farewell" tour and stupid-assed bobbleheads.
^ hey, now ... let's not rule out the bobbleheads.
And a good old fashioned Trouble at the Henhouse Lunch Box wouldn't hurt either.

It's impossible to suck money out of someone who doesn't want that money to be sucked. In other words, the fans are willingly gobbling up what KISS is providing. If the fans didn't want whatever shit KISS is providing, the band wouldn't market it, so they're giving the fans what they want. It's as simple as supply and demand.
Also, don't confuse me with someone who is buying into any of the KISS crap that they are selling. Besides the ticket I bought for the 96 reunion show, I haven't spent any money on them since I was about 13.

You can certainly view KISS as "giving the fans what they want". I see it as a blatant cash grab. Any band with hard core fans could do the same thing, but only one (that I know of) does it. I'm sure the Hip could put out Gord Downie scented underwear and tons of fans would buy it, but thankfully they adhere to that little thing called integrity.

Ok so maybe I should have used the Rolling Stones or Aerosmith as an example. The point is, that These bands have been around for a long time and they're very old by rock standards and they're still going. If they can do it, the hip can too.

KISS just drives me up the wall so I have a tendancy to go overboard when they get mentioned in the same breath as my favourite band. I'll take some deep breaths and calm down now. :thumb:

Yeah, I consider myself a KISS fan and their marketing BS makes me nuts. I'm also a Garth Brooks fan and no matter how much I love his music, I hate him personally because I think he's a big phony and out to give lip service the fans on stage and line his pockets, after all the man has a marketing degree!
In all, for me, it's about the music. That's why I've never really flipped out over obscene lyrics, it's just a SONG.
However, in the hip world, songs actually MEAN something. That's one of the things I love about them and will probably keep them going!
The fact that their induction into the Hall even spawned such a stupid poll and an even stupider notion of them quitting almost makes me wish they hadn't been inducted in the first place. And Im not saying they dont deserve to be there, but even Rob Baker said they dont belong. Based on what they've already accomplished yeah they totally deserved it, but I think if it happened 5-10 years from now, it would of been even sweeter, and then all the retirement talk would be a little more appropriate. But not now, no way, IBE is an amazing album and just goes to show they are by no means close to quitting, and why should they? They still rock, still make amazing albums and put on fantastic shows, quit? No way! And the actual induction was a little blah anyways, the Junos suck to begin with, having to follow acts like Billy(no)Talent and Dum41, just cheapned the whole experience, especially since the Hip didnt even win an award, which I still dont get. We didnt even get to see the ceremony and speech so whats the point? I think they should do these things like the Rock N Roll HOF in Cleveland, just have a mini concert and focus just on the band themselves, having other reputable acts play some tribute songs would have been really cool as well. There Im done. Now lets never speak of this again, at least not for another 10-20 years (hopefully) :thumb:
of course they should quit. Every single song sounds exactly like the last one. I think they wrote one song and have just changed the name. If this is the best that Canada has to offer I am going back to Bryan Adams, at least he sucks and everyone knows it. Why don't you people get a life and start listening to music that wont rot your brain or make you gay.
