So I gots to thinkin' - who is the Hip of sports? Hard working. Loved in their homeland, ignored elsewhere. Same lineup for two decades. Kept their personal lives out of the media.
The best I can come up with, which is unfortunate given how much I loathe him, is Trevor Linden. No one outside of Vancouver loves Linden as much as Vancouverites do. His production (which I'll call equivalent to sales for the sake of argument) slipped a decade ago. And he does a lot of charity work.
Any other ideas?

I'd go with The Toronto Argonauts as The Hip of sports because they're consitent, they go largely unhearalded amongst a bigger sea of sports leagues and franchises, and they've got grit and guys full of character and smarts like Mike Clemons.
I'm going to say Ray Bourque. I always thought he was underrated.

Yeah I like the Hip. Rob Ray not making a playoff roster could be likened to The Hip not making it big in the states. And just to let you know Rob Ray has in fact made a playoff roster. He scored the game winning goal in game 5(i think) of the eastern conference championships against toronto in 99.

Rob Ray was and is a meaningless player. In 99.9% of the games he played in the NHL, he had no bearing on the outcome. A fourth liner who played 5 minutes a game on a good night. Calling him the Tragically Hip of the sports world is a slap in the face to the Hip.
How about the entire CFL? Granted, there have been American teams and Ottawa can't decide whether it really wants a team if it can't share a name with Saskatchewan. However, I get Grey Cup fever every year, but most of the world wouldn't know that there are any professional football leagues outside the NFL.
