And today's Clueless Player Award goes to
Todd Marchant!
"
Linkage is tough because we just don't believe their numbers," said Marchant. "
How can you negotiate a system with a link between revenues and salaries when you just don't respect their financial numbers?"

Did he not f*cking read the owner's latest proposal?!?
Point 12 of the Proposed Framework:
JOINT AUDIT CONTROLS FOR CALCULATION OF CLUB REVENUES
--
Each year's accounting will be performed by an independent accounting firm jointly selected by the NHL and the NHLPA.
With so much free time on their hands, you wouldn't think so many players have their heads up their asses.

cratch:
Salaries have to get under control, cap will do that. Players are overpaid, they need to realize that.
Players have outgrown the ice surface they need to make it larger, that will cut down on the clutch and grab. Look at Mcabe he got cut from his european team because he couldn't keep up on the big surface. Big surface will get rid of the crap players and make room for the skilled players that may be stuck down on the farm.

or maybe the owners who overpay the players who aren't worth it are the one's who are truly overpaid...think about that one...don't sit there and tell me that all players are overpaid, that is a STEREOTYPE, sure there are many who are overpaid, but there are still some who are underpaid, some of these guys making the big $ are at the same time generating even more $ than they are recieving by putting asses in seats, selling jerseys and w/e other merch and all that other shit. it's not that cut and dry.

Players comes and go. Even Gretzky had to retire. The game is bigger than any ONE player. Always has been, always will be.
The "stereotype" of the overpaid NHLer. That's rich.
i find your closed-mindedness to be as equally amusing as you find that to be.
btw, where'd i ever say that anyone player was bigger than the game? i simply stated the fact that superstar, or shall we say, "top players" attract more people to games, and in turn generate more revenue, that is something that cannot be denied. if you want to use gretzky as an example, sure he's retired, but think of all the nhl products he still ahlps to sell just by name association/recognition, all the jerseys, and merchandise i mentioned earlier, hell he's got a new hockey game coming out for x-box and ps2, and you know the league is going to be getting some $$$ from that. the players are what the league revolves around, they are the most important component to having a league. sure you need owners, and facilities, officials yadda yadda yadda, those all fall into place when you have players the caliber of the nhl ready to compete hard, because there is a lot $$$ to be made off of these players, maybe not in Phoenix, or in Columbus, or Miami, or Atlanta or Nashville ect ect. but there sure as hell is Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York, Colorado, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, and other traditional, and proven, viable hockey markets.

And I find your empty-headedness to be even more comical.
if i was truly empty-headed and without brain or critical thought, how could i function as i do and make my fingers type these words, and call you names like "windbag" or "pompous ass"?
I'm not saying the players created the problem, the owners did, and now it needs to be fixed. The players are the ones not willing to do that... they are overpaid!!!!! and it is not a sterotype! you should check the meanings of words before you use them.

Actually, yes it can be denied. WINNING is what attacts people to games. When I lived in Vancouver I went to plenty of games that had a TON of empty seats, despite that team having Bure, Messier, and Mogilny. But nobody wanted to go because the T E A M sucked. Once they started winning - with different players I might add - then people started coming back.
Did attendence in Washington skyrocket when Jagr was there? Hardly. What brought more people in Anaheim? Paul Kariya or the Ducks playing for the Cup? Has anyone ever said: "I want to go to tonight's Blues game to watch Chris Pronger play!!!!" Please.
Yeah, merchandise sells. But how many Swedish Mats Sundin jerseys do you see in Toronto? How many Finnish Saku Koivu jerseys do you see in Montreal? Maybe 1/20th of the number of Leaf/Sundin and Habs/Kouiv jerseys. And when Sundin retires and next big Leaf comes along, do you think everyone will be buying more Sundin jerseys? OF COURSE NOT.
Man, you really do live in some alternate version of reality, don't you?
I am surprised nobody has mentioned extending the season by half a dozen games. The players salaries are what costs the owners big time, it's like 75% of the cost of running a team, so if the owners got to sell tickets to an 88 game season instead of a 82 game season, and the players didn't get any more pay, that would be a good way to even thigns out. That's 6 more games of revenue the owners get, and it only adds like 10 days to the season, which a player wouldn't even notice after six months.
I think the NHLPA would howl like rabid wolfhounds if that was proposed by the owners. Plus I think its illegal under labor law in both the US and Canada.
Illegal? I mean if they negotiated it with the PA, not if the owners forced it on them. It really seems like a reasonable thing, doesn't it? Just a few more games, an extra week of play, and the players don't have to take a salary cap.
I know the players WOULD reject it, I'm just wondering WHY. I don't see any justification. It's a simple idea but it makes sense to me.

If it's simple and it makes sense and everyone wins, then the PA would reject it. Sort of like how they reject profit sharing.
So if the league does better we make more money? No thanks! Cap bad.
Besides, players have whined for a number of years now that there are too many games. Didn't Shanahan's Summitt propose 74 games or something like that?
O I wasn't aware of that, didn't realize they were already whining about the current number of games. Guess that settles that! (I still think it's a great idea).
extending the season! if anything it should be shorter!
you know a lot of people that actually went to Penguins games, went to see Lemieux (when he wasn't injured), a lot of people in Atlanta go to see Heatly and Kovalchuk, Tootoo's got quite the following in Nashville, Luongo (along with Boumeister) is pretty much all Florida's got goin for them, Rick Nash in Columbus, Bret Hull in Phoenix now, people at Rangers games sure weren't there because their team was winning, they were there to see the Rangers' stars, and possibly the other teams' stars as well. Once again you're wrong, and once again you try to make something out to look like it's black and white, when it's a rather colourful situation.
