Just wondering what some of you think is the most surprising moment you've ever experienced at a Hip Show? Either due to a song you weren't expecting, or something that happens on stage etc.?

Mine has to be Edgefest in Barrie 2003, when they kicked into Fire In The Hole to open the show....

I was kinda surprised in Detroit this past September. Those girls waving the sign "Gregory Peck Fans" prompted the boys to play "Silver Jet". Although, now that I think about it, perhaps it had been on the set list prior to the show. Regardless, it was still pretty cool when he called them out before playing the song.

Also, when they played nautical at the 12/30/02 hamilton show. My first show, earlier that year, they didn't play it. So excited to hear it live the first time. Not very surprising as it was cool.

at the london show when they started playing lake fever, twist my arm, hiccups into daredevil based on the previous few setlists from the canadian tour i was shocked to hear any of those songs but they were amazing.
the first time I heard Opiated live, one of my all-time Hip faves, it was Hamilton 2000-12-21 Evening with the Hip tour. I heard those opening riffs and I was stunned, I almost fell down I was so excited, sounds corny but I love that tune and I wasnt expecting to hear it ever.
The most suprised I have ever been was at the Rochester show October 1998.
All of the sudden they started playing Boots Or Hearts.
I thought my mind was playing a cruel joke on me.
But it really was Boots Or Hearts.
That was the first time that they played it since 1991.
Almost 8 whole years.

same song, different show (November 10?, 1996 at Pacific Coliseum). the opening notes hit and there's 10,000-odd people spellbound, perhaps for a number of reasons, though for me it was the strange "weren't these guys playing this song in their basement a few years back?" kinda thing.
everytime the hip have launched into yet to be released tunes i've been blown away.... m@w, lake fever, bastard, freak turbulence and others during the NYE/NYD shows at 2000... 'ballroom' and joesephine at molson park...

new songs for some reason always seem to put the bulk of the crowd to sleep but i love hearing hip songs live that i can't sing along too...
1996-05-13, Syracuse. Idiots swarmed the orchestra pit and stage during NOIS (I think). The band started into Sherpa (I think) and left the stage. The surprise was that they came BACK and finished the set when the crowd calmed down and cleared the pit. Pretty funny moment, though, was when a really fat, really drunk guy was just standing on the stage, staring at Gord. Gord looked over, said "hey man, how's it goin? I'm just trying to do my job here." The guy seemed to wake out of his daze, looked out at the crowd, screamed, and dove off the stage. Classic.
Sept. 11, 1993 at the Vic Theatre in Chicago--my first Hip show. I owned UTH, RA and had just bought FC. I was not prepared for the "Gordon Downie in concert experience". The Hip takes the stage and before the music starts, Gord starts into some kind of "we're from the northcountry...hockey....grizzly bears...other stuff that I don't remember" rant and then the band kicks in tight together and it's THE HIP. I haven't been the same since. Does this count?

I've got 3:

Boots or Hearts- 98 Rochester- my first show.
Everytime You Go- Evening tour - Buffalo
Opiated- Evening With- Hamilton
Fighter Fighter in Cleveland last September....
1)Seeing Gord fall over a speaker on stage at the November Toronto show this year.

2) buying ducats off the scalpers in sec. 118 right beside the stage for the toronto show and then realizing we were sitting a row behind the families of the band members , there must have been at least 15-20 of them all with Backstage passes, watching what I could only assume was Gord D's dad swivel to the music was hilarious.

and secondly, ARA 97, Rideau Carleton raceway Ottawa, my girlfriend and I were there, the Hip play Wheat King's as a final song. As i sort of sway and waltz to the song I feel my girlfriend brushing up behind me, a hand enters my shorts and begins to stroke my member .. i gyrate to the sensation ... the euphoric feeliing of hearing such song and the groping of my shaft .... suddenly , from behind me to my left , i hear my girl hollar, "you bitch! that's my boyfriend! to my shock and disbelief, i turn around and realize the woman pleauring me was in fact NOT my girlfriend, but rather it was a 40ish looking Mom! she quickly squeezed through the crowd before my girlfriend could say anymore , being about three sheets to the wind i was feeling some quirky humour in it all, stunned ... my girlfriend turned and uttered to me "quit smiling you ass hole!" ...
i'll never forget that one.
Great thread, but I think it's time to give haymaker the Old Yeller Special treatment. WAYYYY too much info. Jesus.

Boston, July 2002, hearing the opening guitar riff of Pigeon Camera about halfway through the set. It was my first time hearing that song performed live, and I almost peed my pants I was so excited.
