Cool story haymaker! I agree with you on the recent T.O. show where Gord fell down to chase the runaway mic. As for the rest of the story... uh, I wish I could relate, but I can't.
My surprising song moment was the 1999 show in Toronto when they played Cordelia. I never thought in a million years they'd play that song... I was in awe! :thumb:
Hip at hershy center. My first show, changed my life.
highlight from that show would be save the planet...
1. Johnny handing me drumsticks - 1/1/02
2. An Inch An Hour - final song HoB LA 10/20/00
3. 3 Pistols - final song HoB Chi 7/18/02
4. Fighter Fighter - Odeon Cle 9/19/04
5. So many more 'songs out of the hat' on the Evening With... tour
hey, what kind of drumstick was it?
I've only seen them once but the surprising moments for me in October were....
Them playing "Nautical Disaster" because it's like my favorite Hip song and I've been to shows where my fave song of the artist is not played. Also, looking at the set list and seeing they weren't going to even play ND!
The other surprise was when Gord talked about screwing up the end of Springtime and he went into this big thing and ended it with "Well rock stars aren't to apologize so fuck you" or something along those lines.
I LOVED IT!
I was also surprised the tour manager was not a bitch and surprised that Paul snuck past us while we were waiting behind the venue to meet them. That sneaky bastard!
2 moments come to mind, although i'm sure there's others...
2/19/99 hershey center when gord fell over during his wild contorting/dancing during the song grace too...funniest thing i ever saw!
12/31/99 last of the unplucked gems at midnight

Vic Firth American Classic 5B. Only because it was NYE. Had it been Thanksgiving, they would have been turkey.
Hip shows are all about surprizes. The first time I saw them, @ the Fillmore on the Henhouse tour, The second they stepped out on stage it was a surprize.
As soon as I saw Gordie's face I thought, "Jeeziz, this cat's insane. Totally nuts." Then he stepped to the mic and all doubt was washed away as he smiled, muttering, barely audibly, "Please, you have to stop... I'm going to cry."
But this last go 'round, again at the Fillmore, Gordie was sick. He had a red handkerchief with him through the entire show, and was not a happy man.
"I hate you, San Francisco." He kept saying.
And his monitor kept slipping from his belt.
Finally the monitor slipped the camel straw, he ripped it from his ear, turned and discovered that his mic cord was wrapped around the stand. He kicked it loose and kept going, miming a gun to Paul's head :rambo: ... kept going, kicked his floor monitor, turned stage right and yelled, "Fucking Fix It!"... And kept going, resting his foot on the monitor, his mic stand laying on the floor like a buddy gunned down while he forged on.
Vancouver 17/11/04- Boots or Hearts....i dont know why i wasnt expecting but it really caught me off guard

he had the red handkerchief with him for every show on this latest tour. just a "thing" with him for this tour.
Funny. I had no idea he'd been carrying the thing all tour, but he did indeed have a cold this night. Kept cursing about his hatred for San Francisco and their weather & germs.
Perhaps he finally realized that his life would be easier if he were to keep that sweat under some control.
The most surprised I've ever been was probobly when they played NOIS for the 13th straight times I've seen them. Sorry, but they gotta pull that tune once and a while.
My first show At Molson Park in 89 he lit his boots on fire.

According to Gord in 2003 at Edgefest, the boots were his brothers...

Nice, I got a Vic Firth from the lees palace show..its all busted up and shit...sweeeeeeet
I think Fire Boots and DareDevil from Edge Fest win for me. Flamenco at Music Without Borders was pretty shocking too. Or maybe "I Can Only Give You Everything" at the Hammer in 02 during New Orleans
Cheers
