Yeah, it is a great and very underappreciated song.
Really? This song always seemed like a bore to me.
I think this song ruins an other wise perfect album. I loathe it. I was lifting to phantom this morning, and I had to stop my set in the middle of decline bench to skip the song.
I think it's a good song, but it fits on PP kinda uncomfortably.
lyrically really compelling ... but the droning of the chorus, not so much.

the rules is a good song, but i'd have to say thompson girl is the best mellow song on that album, even over bob c.- sorry
I disagree about Thompson Girl. Great song, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't classify it as mellow. I think it's more disturbing and sordid.

never much cared for the song, but gotta say that when they played it in Vancouver in '99, there was a vacuum-like effect of all the sound being sucked out of the song just prior to the above lyric being delivered. it was the trippiest thing... then again, it
was Vancouver (mind tricks sometimes happen in these parts)!
on the album, I agree that the song doesn't seem to fit overall, but it does set up Chagrin Falls/Escape/Penguin as a second beginning to the disc. So it's got that going for it... which is nice.

i really like the rules but somehow the chorus just doesn't go with the rest of the song, if this song had a better chorus many more people would love the song. the lyrics are great.

I think that Vancouver show was the only time I saw The Rules live and I thought it was fantastic as well. The group I was with was not too excited about it, but they were just casual fans.
I have always gotten excited when I hear songs that are either not that popular or not played often...Titanic Terrarium, Opiated, Thompson Girl, The Rules, to name only a few.
Ahh yes, the sweet smell, taste and feel of BC bud. That trip was the first time, and I guess only time, that I have experienced the shear joy and excitement of smoking up in a public place at the Amsterdam Cafe. Is it still open? I still remember almost shitting my pants when my buddy, who lives in Van, took me there, and the minute you walked into the joint you were hit in the face with the pugent odour. What a cool experience to sit on cushions on the floor, eat Lebanese food, and smoke freely on a joint, or two or three.
How could you hear Thompson Girl as disturbing and sordid?
