I love this:

Watch the band through a bunch of dancers
Quickly, follow the unknown with something more familiar.

First two lines that describe to me every hipfans experience if they aren't on the rail at the concert. Watching Gord belt out this tune which is familiar and usually follows an unknown (or lesser known) song in the set, as I peer through the bobbing heads of the dancing fans before me always makes me wanna take a picture that could encapsulate all that is Das Hips live show.

Also:

I don't wanna put another thought
in my head.

I guess I like that one because it reminds me of an interview I saw where Gordie says something to the effect of "Eventually the thoughts and the lyrics are so loud in your head you just have to right them down and start another album."
"to boldly clap in a room full of nothing, you never know, it could be one of those poignant evenings"

"thar she blows, Jacques Cousteau, hear her sing so soft and low"

"it's only human to want to inhabit every feeling you've got"

"the beautiful lull"
Bill Barilko disappeared that summer; he was on a fishing trip.
The last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the Cup.

It does not get better than that...unless we're counting any two lines in any Tragically Hip song, in which case "fingers and toes, fingers and toes, forty things we share / forty-one if you include the fact that we don't care" has to be given some serious consideration.

Yes! Can't forget that one. Especially live....Gord definitely puts his all into that one.

I have to agree. Loved poets when it was released, but hearing it live made it that much better. The live intro and then the opening lyrics kick ass.
"I was first attracted by your scent...your heart must be a caramalized onion"

"Spring starts when a heatbeat's pounding..."

"I want a book that'll make me drunk, full of freaks and disenfranchised punks"

Live - "He said i'm TRAGICALLY HIP"

"Violins and tambourines and this is what i think they mean..."

basically, i'm pretty much moved the second i hear the first couple of words that come out of gord's mouth...except the following:

"This is Tiger the Lion, gimme the Knuckles of Frisco"
Tiger the Lion rules. I vote for Tiger the Lion.
So the the chemistry is set....
After reading another recent thread I can't believe how nobody has posted, "What's the deal with your Dad, he don't even know my name." Get Back Again is a pure classic.

A shipwreck, eh? I always thought it referred to a barracuda, or some other predatory fish.

Hmm. Years ago (around the time of the release of FC), I remember reading some article about somebody finding some ornate metal pieces, possibly body armor parts dating to circa 16th century, in the belly of some big-ass sea turtle somewhere. Thought that this was the inspiration for the lyric, but hell....i dunno....

That was also the explanation they gave (Century Old Sea-Turtle... those things live for friggin' ever) over at the 'ol Burning Church.

If there's danger in the language gentlemen, I suggest no further use of your two way radio........

That is exactly what I thought of when I saw the Grey Cup dealy...they played it after Gus, an unknown to most viewers, with a classic...and then those cheerleaders bouncing around singing the words...well I was only thinking of one thing by that point. But back to your post - it was well put. :thumb:
"Had a heart, but I used to be older/I'm not, like I used to be"

... but seriously folks:

best opening line's gotta be (this week anyway): "I had this dream where I relished the fray/And the screaming filled my head all day".

the use of the word "relished" just puts it in another orbit in terms of preparing you for a song that's not quite like any other song. And the screaming at the beginning matches the scratching fingernails at the end just exquisitely.

plus I think it's a song about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald (which was transporting relish, if I'm not mistaken)*.

Here we are now where are we?
Its like nothing I've ever seen
