Oh, another good one:

"Titilation's been replaced..."
"i like the tone of your trumpet...c'mon let's spill some paint"
They don't know how old I am;
They found armor in my belly.
From the sixteenth century --
Conquistador, I think.

I mean, yeah. Has anyone else ever started a song by anthropomorphizing a shipwreck?

I also have to admire the clever humor of:

Sharks don't attack the Irish;
It's mostly Australians.

And:
There's me, then there's you:
I could dance with the puck
In a telephone booth;
You said, "I don't give a fuck."

Yes, it's a little derivative of Fireworks, but I also prefer it to the original don't-give-a-fuck-about-hockey couplet.
"Does it diminish your
super-capacity to love"

and

"It's only human to want to inhabit every feeling you've got
and more often than not let's take it to the Nth degree"

and

"those melodies come back to me
in times beyond our heartbeat"

I'm sure there are at least 10 more that get me everytime, but that's what I can come up with for now.

I was hoping someone would bring up the intro to 'Locked.' What an ominous, inscrutable line that is.

A shipwreck, eh? I always thought it referred to a barracuda, or some other predatory fish. Not only is Gord amusingly fending off a barracuda on the cover of that album, but he also refers to 'a baracuda, ya know, a compulsive killer that destroys more than [it] eat[s]' in the liner notes. Given that the tune is about a serial killer, I find that introduction---if it IS about a 'compulsive killer'---downright chilling.
I always thought it was a shark. Sharks have been found with all kinds of interesting things in their stomachs. And we know Gord likes sharks.
"Tom Thompson came paddling past, I'm pretty sure it was him."

I don't know, it just fires me up. It's probably more the music than the lyrics, but I can't separate the two.

I always pictured a corpse in a car trunk with bullet wounds in his stomach. I just ignored the Conquistador part. :wink:

Cheers,
John
The car trunk, metaphorically, is the shark's belly. And evil is old....

About as old as Green Hundred-Year-Old-Eyed Jealousy.
lies over time, float to the surface

and how bout

here we are now where are we ?

this game's fun
How about

"Rolling hills all covered in suede. I'm heat-nervous and out of road...."

or

"Spring starts when a heartbeat's pounding. When the birds can be heard above the reckoning carts doing some final accounting..."

or

"Old lion's dying, got left behind. Cut your teeth, lose your meat, and man it's just a matter of time..."
Problem Bear Wrote:I have a list made of my 30 favourite Hip lyrics (I'm a list-maker; it helps keep me from actually accomplishing anything) and, looking over it, only two of those lines start songs. They are:

Your smile is fading a bit
So I ration it

That's gorgeous. It's fragile. It whispers. And we've all been there, so it hurts all the more.

Also:

Your imagination's having puppies
It could be a video for new recruits
Just stare into the camera
And pretend that you've got the flu

This is entirely for the "imagination's having puppies." It's the quintessential Hip lyric in that it's instantly evocative, but will evoke different images and feelings in everybody.

Cheers,
John

I like you, sir.

Agreed completely on all points.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot

"Me debunk an American myth? And take my life in my hands?"
[quote="K-Town Lassie"]How about

"Spring starts when a heartbeat's pounding. When the birds can be heard above the reckoning carts doing some final accounting..."

Yes! Can't forget that one. Especially live....Gord definitely puts his all into that one.
