NEW YORK - Rolling Stone magazine has named the top 500 songs of all time in its new issue, and, well, the No. 1 song isn't exactly a complete unknown.

Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" tops the list, compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson (news), Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others — in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday.

"No other pop song has so thoroughly challenged and transformed the commercial laws and artistic conventions of its time, for all time," writes David Fricke, a senior editor of Rolling Stone.

Following Dylan is the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," John Lennon (news)'s "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

"It's worth noting that "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Satisfaction" were recorded within a month of each other," Fricke told The Associated Press Wednesday. "It says a lot about how fast pop music was moving at that time."

Rounding out the top ten are "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry (news), the Beatles' "Hey Jude," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say."

No one makes the chart more than (surprise, surprise) the Beatles, who have 23 tunes on the list. The Rolling Stones have 14 hits, and Dylan 12.

Though the list is heavy on the `50s, `60s and `70s (voters were told to focus on "the rock 'n' roll era"), the most recent song is 2003's "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, charting at no. 180.

Squeaking in as the 500th all-time best song is The Tragically Hip's "Evelyn."

I strongly disagree about Satisfaction...number 2? C'mon...Chuck Berry deserves that slot.

If EVELYN made it on the list, 50 Hip songs had better be ahead of it...
"Satisfaction" is probably the most overrated song in the history of popular music. And I can name a dozen or so Dylan songs that have stood the test of time better than "Like a Rolling Stone."

Ah, the error of catalogues and lists.....
Sympathy for the Devil and many other Stones songs should be before Satifaction.
I'm all for Bob having the top slot...and I'm glad the hip made it on to the list, but somehow I think that Evelyn wasn't the right choice...

HA Evelyn? Ya right nice one. I love how everyone believe you.

You bought that Evelyn joke? he did slide it in there nicely
Heck, I'm all for giving Dylan the top 10. Smile

Just yesterday I was poking around dylanchords.com and found a ranking of songs based on the number of times the pages were hit. "Like a Rolling Stone" is number 6.

Attempts to make lists like these are generally futile because there are no real criteria by which you can rank songs. Inevitably, the best known (i.e. most popular) song by each artist gets planted in the highest position, but this doesn't necessarily mean it's their "best."

"Satisfaction" is a perfect example of that.

Rolling Stone's "Greatest" lists, whatever the subject, always blow. I lost all respect for that rag long, long ago....
A parallel: given the chance, Rolling Stone would easily name NOIS as the Hip's greatest song.

So essentially, who cares what they say.
i'm talking about this on air today, and nobody that's called has agreed with the top 2 anyways...where's the zeppelin?? even if it's not their greatest, i'm shocked stairway isn't on there....
IMHO...Stairway is even more overrated than Satisfaction. I can't stand it, never could, even loving some of Zep's material as I do.
