This is one of my faves tunes from IVL, one of the reasons why I think the albums best songs were the ones that, um, aren't on the album.
As far as meaning goes, the song deals with transformations, making the remarkable out of the everyday (or the ultra mundane). It could be about the way memory filters experience (your senses assign, your memories compress portions of your etc.), or about the way the creative process turns lead into gold. I like the latter, as GD often seems to write about art itself.
The song itself is (of course) called "ultra mundane" but it contains a couple of GD's most memorable and witty lines:
I love the wit in the lyric:
"as welcome as a sneeze in a motorcycle helmet"
"you looked at me like i was eating runny eggs in slow motion"
So it's not mundane at all, much less ultra mundane.
The weirdest lines were on Burning Church (I think) as:
maybe, maybe
i saw you soften baby
as your angst had me over your shoulder
your beleaguered old lady
but that doesn't make much sense. assuming that's not from an official source, i think the real lyric is much simpler:
maybe, maybe
i saw you soften baby
you glanced at me over your shoulder
you beleaguered old lady
but what the heck does that mean? i wondered about that for a long time, but then this hit me out of the blue: the optical illusion in which the face of an old hag resolves into the profile of a glamorous young woman who is looking over her shoulder. (see below) this relates well to the lyric as a whole.
I also like the way in which a discovery like that -- finding magic in a troubling lyric -- relates back to the song's basic concern with transformations. Then at another level, that transformation itself is so remarkable that it completely belies the title of the song.

Yeah, I was going to say that was the best part of the montage. Pretty cool stuff for an incredible song. I've wondered to myself why Mundane, Problem Bears, and Forest Edge weren't include on IVL. I kind of know the reason one of the band members gave but to me those three songs are very strong. In Bears, the line, "like two tough talking goalies really going at it upstairs" is just ridiculously splendid! Also, the talk of Shakespeare and Voltaire is just classic! :thumb:
