WE ARE NOT A SOCIALIST REGIME, so LET ME KEEP AS MUCH OF MY MONEY AS POSSIBLE, AND KEEP IT OUT OF THE HANDS OF CORRUPT BUREAUCRATS.

I'm FINE with where I live, thank you, and am fine with my CURRENT president.

Me too, I wouldn't trade it for anything, and I'm quite proud to say that this "socialist regime" of "corrupt bureaucrats" attempts to aid the less fortunate and provide the basics for every man, woman and child in the nation. Perfect? No. Better? Yes.

We on the left believe that government can have a positive affect on the lives of individuals in a nation, in fact, it's the only thing that ever has. We're realistic optomists. We don't judge before we know.

I love the fact that the kid running the page hates the Religious Right AND Canada. It's the perfect Teenage Angst Page: Whatever you got, I HATE IT!

Oh, and it'd be fun to just point out all the spelling and grammar error's, but it just adds to the hillarity! Smile

See, political crap gets everybody all amped up, and we tend to make rash statements and make false interpretations when that happens. I wasn’t referring to Canada with the “socialist / corrupt” statement I made. I was merely pointing out that MY views as a capitalist regarding taxation are certainly going to be different than anyone who is an advocate of a more leftist economic structure. I’m not making any judgements, aside from the fact that I believe bureaucrats by default are prone to corruption, whether it be in Communist China, Nazi Germany, or anywhere in between.

As a disciple of the United States Constitution and the democratic republic it supports and protects, I believe that the government’s role should be strictly limited. I do not believe the government’s role in my life and my society should be as large as a socialist does, obviously, and I don’t see a problem with that. I believe that the more money a government wrests from a citizen’s earnings, the more chance there is for misappropriation and waste. On principle, I do not think it is the government’s function is to take from me to give to somebody else, especially if I don’t get to have an hand in structuring the lives of those who receive the money I made. Why is this so hard for some people to understand?
Hey Esthete, you know Newfoundland or Cape Breton...ever heard of them? Mighty poor places up here in the North (Newfoundland had a slight revival with oil, but by and large the province is still suffering)?

Their tax RATES are higher than poor US states in the South who are deathly afraid of taxes and form lynch mobs everytime somebody dares utter a word like "tolerance" or "equity". Therefore our poor provinces are able to support their own citizens than your poor states, even though on account of issues like weather and winter, we require more expensive infrasturcture than the South. And you know what? People here don't starve on account of taxes, they live their lives, and simply accept that their dollars so more help in the hands of the government than keeping it themselves.

If you got a tax break, what would you do? What would you buy? Where would you travel? Regardles what you'd do with your money, unless the answer is "donate every penny to charity", the money would do NOTHING to help the people who need it most...not just the poor (you can't use the age old "GET A JOB!" you Conservatives swear by), but people in rural areas who need safe transportation, people in hospital who need life-saving surgery, and children who need to grow up to function in the world.

I've never been happier to live in a nation that doesn't think the way you do...

It's not. Is it hard to understand that a large number of us feel it's wrong and that corruption comes not from structure, but from leaving things to the business elites and the invisible hand?
I am going to get back to the original topic, The Tragically Hip and being patriotic. Music has NOTHING to do with being Patriotic. I like rock. It does not matter if the band is Canadain, English, even Aussie, as long as I like the music and the lyrics strike a cord..cool beans!! Listen away, and if some narrow minded prick does not like it tell him TFB it is MUSIC, a freedom of expression and you can listen to whatever you like. Being patriotic is a different story. Being Patriotic is more than how you feel about the current admisitration. I have never been really involved with politics until several months ago, why did I, because I do not like how things are going in the country that I live in and love. So I suggest to you, instead of moving out of the country, do what makes this country great, STAND UP! Raise your VOICE make yourself HEARD!! Go to a town meeting, tell them you don't like the war in Iraq, you don't like the way the economy is being handled, you don't like the way the US is seen around the world, let people know, THAT is being Patriotic, leaving is not and that has nothing to do with the music that you listen to.
Well, I'm a Christian - and I most certainly do not support Bush. If would be nice, though, if we had a candidate who was both against abortion and against the war in Iraq. I just don't understand why it seems like so many Christians support the war in Iraq. To me, this war does not seem very Christian.
Kerry's anti-choice isn't he? He's also anti-gay (not pro-family, that's a euphemism). And he's certainly opposed to the way the war is being waged. I could be wrong on the first count, because I only heard it third-hand from someone on Crossfire. I just thought it might interest you that he could possibly be aligned with three qualities you'd look for...

Well, I understand what you're saying - and I don't disagree with you. However, at this moment, I have pretty much given up on this country. Besides, it's only two days until - so it's too late to back out now, even if I wanted to. Also, I just don't like the way Americans get perceived by some people at the moment. Sometimes I do feel like people in my posistion get lambasted from both sides - by the right-wing bullies in this country for disliking the current administration, and by the extreme anti-Americans just for being American. This is one reason why I really dislike being American. I'm trying to be optimistic about believing that most people don't dislike Americans - even if they dislike the current American administration - but some hateful comments towards Americans that I tend to stumble across on the internet do tend to make me feel a bit doubtful. But I'm trying to avoid this kind of negative thinking - and I'm hoping that moving to Canada will make me a more optimistic person.

Maybe you're right - I'm not sure - but I've heard others say that he was pro-choice. Either way, though, I do consider abortion to be the lesser of two evils compared to the war in Iraq - which is just plain wrong, as far as I'm concerned.
yet another thing that makes the US a wonderful country. Your right to your opinion, and I respect that I am not saying that the US is allways right in what we do, or what we say or even how we act, but we can allways change it. I am sorry that you feel the way you do, I am not a Christan and we might have very little in common between us, but none the less, I wish you all the best living in Canada, but remember "Home is where the heart is" FZ BTW - IMO the US is worse off without people like you.
This is not in any way a criticism. It's not. I have my opinions. Maybe I'm too stubborn to do the easy thing and get out of a bad situation! but if things were really in a bad way on a grand scale here in Canada, I wouldn't move back to England. Isn't there a part of you that wants to remain in the US, fighting for what you believe? Trying to make a difference from within? Once you're up here, Americans will dismiss your point of view. I have American friends who live here who have been very disappointed to find that out. My friend from Philly thought she'd be able to immerse herself in a culture she appreciates more up here while still waging a war of words against Bush...but even though she's from the US and lived there 27 years, she's been here for two years now and American dismiss everything she thinks out of hand. She's finding it hard for her ideology to be heard because she left and, in the eyes of many of her American friends, "quit". Your thoughts?
she's gotta be the smartest American girl ever..Tongue
BTW - Kerry is Pro Choice, thinks the states should decide about Gay Marrage and is not Anti Iraq war, but does want to change the way it is being handled.
