I could sort of deal with Avril - in a "at least she doesn't lip sync" kind of way. But Hillary Duff?

What a strange, strange world we live in.
I think it's safe to say they better get their asses on the road if they wanna sell some records.
IVL was out of the Top 10 after the third week if memory serves me correct.

I disagree with correlating The Hip's album sales to their tour announcements (or lack of). Since at least Henhouse they have never announced a Canadian tour until later in the summer. I don't see how announcing an Amercian theatre/club tour is going to help Canadian sales of the album.

I suppose you're right. At this point though, I think ANY kind of tour would help them shift a few units, either in Canada or the U.S. In the grand scheme of things, record sales don't really mean squat, but it's always cool to see the boys make a splash on the charts. And it does sting a bit when you see talentless industry-created hacks like Hillary Duff out-selling them in their own country. Sign of the times, I guess.

Yup. That was the point I was trying to make. You put it very nicely.

Maybe the Hip need a primetime soap/drama on the WB.
You could substitute 'Hillary Duff' with 'Avril Lavigne' as being a talentless industry-created hack also. I ask again, how many 14 year olds are there in Canada? They must be at least 70% of the population! How else can you explain Avril selling so many records? It boggles my mind. It truly does!

I read that Avril is going out with that pug Derek(sp?) from Sum 41, another bunch of hacks. I guess Derek slagged Jeff Martin of the Tea Party during one of the band's shows. I'm sure some people on hipbase.com aren't big fans of the Tea Party and Jeff Martin in particular but to see a talentless hack like Derek the nobody slag someone who has at least been in the business for a while and earned his dues is pathetic. If the world outside of Canada concentrated more on the actual talented bands in Canada instead of Avril, Sum 41, Nickelback, Celine than the music world would be a better place. I'm certainly not proud of the Canadian bands that made it big outside of Canada (exceptions of course, Neil Young and a few others).
lets all go and buy a second album!

I agree. Anytime you read mainstream magazines like Rolling Stone or Spin, you would think that all the so-called *cool* bands come from either the U.K. or the U.S. Sadly, Canada is only known for churning out crappy watered-down pap like Avril, Nickelback, Sum 41, Celine, etc... and it's a goddamn shame. There are so many incredible bands/artists in this country who deserve to be heard on the world stage, but unfortunately that'll probably never happen. There are a few exceptions who have made some inroads in the U.K. lately (Hawksley Workman, The Weakerthans, Broken Social Scene) and that was only because these artists toured their asses off non-stop for months at a time over there, earning a few rave reviews in the process. But even after accomplishing that, there's no way any of these bands will ever get mainstream radio play. Their music is just too damn original.

I remember reading an article from the States about the Hip a few years back where the writer called them "the greatest undiscovered band in the world", which reminds me of a great Gord quote from the Muchmusic Intimate & Interactive show from 2000:

Fan: "What does it feel like to be massive Canadian icons?"

Gord: "About the same as being un-massive American icons."
I think that the biggest problem is that the Hip are not popular amongst the 15-year-old girls that make up todays marketplace. If they want to dominate the charts, they'll have to grow some hair, ditch all the musical insturments in favour of a synthesizer and start writing songs about summer crushes. Paul can do backup rapping.
It bothers the hell out of me cuz The Hip have been doing this since Hillary Duff was born! The only thing the little morons should think about at such a height is the fall back down. Look for Hillary in five years, or Avril for that matter... They won't be there. Remember the Spice Girls? No? I didn't think so... These are based on sales not talent. Why so many sales? Because they're considered "hot" by the media right now... That's all it is... If you flip through a magazine, I guarantee you'll find their pictures at least once. If the Hip had the same publicity agents and low-integrity as these girls do, they would be in the top spot still. But the Hip aren't about that... There should actually be charts based on talent/creativity instead of charts based on sales... Why the hell would you base a chart on sales in the first place?! Everyone else is doing it... go jump off that cliff too, Little Timmy...
Maybe the Hip should spend less money on new managers and better studio work and more money on breast implants tummy tucks.
IBE is #2 next to Avril according to this link:
