I was really hoping for a couple of longer songs on this one. It is usually the longer ones that have that little extra music to drift to. The hip don't realise it yet but they are destined to be Canada's great jam band. Here's hoping for a 25 minute jam on the next tour.
Yes!! This album seems like M@W with Tiger the Lion and The Bastard taken out. Like Gord's second solo album, the length is very disappointing because of the sheer brilliance of the music. Even packing 14 mostly short songs onto M@W couldn't make it sound more like an album and less like a patchwork quilt with small components hurriedly assembled together to try and make something bigger than the sum of the parts.
Those track lengths better be jokes or mistranspositions!!
Not really. Its all about the quality, not the quantity. Just as log as they jam a few out live! Long live The Hip!

Good point dude. That is one of their best jam songs. I was hoping for someting like Greendale which has a couple of longer songs on it. 10 minutes plus, good ol crazy horse jamming away. I was a little distressed that the longest song is only 4 and a half minutes though.
I have to agree with Bauer, the songs at first glance seem way too short. maybe thats a result of Kaspar's influence on the record; doesnt most of his work with PJ and Foo Fighters have alot of 3 minute songs in them? Live, I think the band will stretch them out as they feel like doing, in my opinion, jams are great to hear live, but it tends to be overworked on an album.

As someone said 100th is short, so is Nautical Disaster (the singing is only about two minutes long).

I am glad the songs are short.
3 to 4 minutes of pure rock n roll that you can crank up and blow your speakers with.
Long songs seem to drag on a bit, but there are many exceptions to that like Giftshop.
I guess the guys just wanted to write a straight forward rock album. I certainly hope that's the case!

Count me among those that like 'em long. I was sorta dissapointed to see so many radio-friendly lengths, but hopefully the quality will make up for tha lack of quantity.
I love the extended jams as much as the next guy, but when the Hip are in writing mode I don't think they start out by saying "hey, let's write a 6 minute jam song!" It just doesn't happen that way. When you start writing, there's no way of telling how short or how long a song is going to be. I'll bet that if I compiled a list of my all-time favorite songs, chances are the majority of them would clock in at under 3 minutes. Length has nothing to do with quality. There's no doubt in my mind that the new record is gonna rock, regardless of song length.
