Starting to pick my way through the book. So far so good. The first chapter had the feel of a high level magazine article but has since been more in depth.
The first real tidbit of new (to me at least) info was that the band was debating calling themselves “Bedspring Symphony”

I'm learning all kinds of interesting little tidbits so far. Never knew that the Northern Pikes song "Place That's Insane" was inspired by the Lakeview Manor in Kingston.

One of my favourite albums by Bedspring Symphony is "Call Me Ishmael".

I'm a couple chapters in so far. Not to spoil anything, but the the Kato Kaelin story is hilarious.
Man that Kato Kaelin story made me laugh, one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time!

But why doesn't he capitalize the "The" in the band's name! It makes me so angry to read the Tragically Hip!!!

I'm in the middle of the Up to Here/Road Apples chapter. I never realized that Benmont Tench (keyboardist for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) played on RA. I double checked the liner notes and sure enough, there he is. Apparently he plays on Twist My Arm, but the book mentions that his part was only a few seconds long, and is barely noticeable on the album. I re-listened to the song, and I still can't make it out.
So much great stuff in this book for hardcore Hip heads. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I picked up the book last week at Chapters and found it buried on a bottom shelf. However, they had a nice display of the Secret Path book and Introduce Yerself vinyl on the top shelf and were promoting the "Gord Downie" book written by Steve Newton on the display closest to the entrance. I took a quick flip through... it appears to be a coffee table book.

After reading this tidbit in the book I listened to Twist My Arm twice on Spotify. Couldn't hear the keys. Dusted off my Road Apples CD and listened again and still couldn't hear it. I think it might require a good set of headphones to pick it out as it must be buried quite low in the mix.
I remember looking at the liner notes years ago and thinking how cool it must have been for the guys to have spent some time in the studio with a "Heartbreaker" knowing that Gord is a big Petty fan. I was disappointed to read that Benmont was not in the studio with them and was a late over-dub. $1,500 is a nice payday for a few seconds work.

I bought the Steve Newton book about Gord. Lots of good pictures and stories - from what I have read so far it mainly focuses on the nineties era- ( Up to here to Phantom Power) though I am not all the way through it yet. I will be picking up the Never Ending Present this weekend.

I still check it out once in a while, as sometimes people post cool youtube links to rare tracks, live stuff, etc.. But it's gotten pretty crazy over there with the militant stance of the admins regarding certain topics, particularly Barclay's book. Like no one is allowed to talk about it or post photos of it because it's "unauthorized" and that reading it is somehow an insult to the band. It's beyond silly.

Beyond silly is right.
