Analytics and fake news from the Facebook page got Trudeau elected.

Do you think its a coincidence that Justin is a Hip fan? Open your eyes people!
thompson girl Wrote:Wow. I ordered the book the other day and picked it up tonight. I thought it was a pre-order until the release date.

If i was still on the FB fan site i’d go and gloat! But, I’m not. Couldn’t stand that place a long time ago.

After reading your post I called a nearby Chapters; on the website it was indicated nearly 50 were in stock. Once confirmed they were on the floor, I darted up to Barrie probably quicker than one should be able to at the tail end of rush hour. After getting home and having a meal, I was able to tackle about 100 pages.

There’s some good stuff in here so far. Only one error that nerdy completists will scoff at (without spoiling too much, it involves *GASP* mixing up two bootlegs). More room for criticism and praise once it’s finished.
Bought the book this morning. I thought it wasn't out until April 3rd, but the Indigo right near my apartment had about 30 copies. The one on Marine Drive for those of you in North Vancouver who want to pick it up.
This thread is awesome. I preordered this on Amazon and I expect it in about 10-12 days, but that is fine. I'm sure it will be great and I like the tolerant attitude here as opposed to the FB page. They are led by an admin who is 100% against the book, but then admits she is going to buy it and read it. You can't make this stuff up. The argument that it isn't Barclay's story to tell may be one of the dumbest ever uttered. The other one is that we as fans owe it to the band to "protect the brand". News flash, first off its a band, not a brand. Second, books like this will lead many people to go and buy band stuff they may not already have. It's kind of a win win. If Rob or one of the other guys decides to write something, we'll all buy that as well. But until that happens, I'm glad Barclay took this project on. He seems like a fine writer and very knowledgeable.

Yes, the admin in the group is something else on this topic.

Yet oddly the group has a high tolerance for bootleg collectables, artwork and clothing that obviously does redirect money from the band or the charities they individually or collectively have supported.

Now for the 95% of the postings that are repetitive or just plain odd, every so often there's something interesting -- few neat audio and video clips have popped up.
When that page first started, the admin was MAv, and so it was so it was more Hip “official”. Once the fans took over Admin duties it became more of an extreme fandom page rather than Hip official. That’s when i left. Anyway, way off topic in the thread that i started, but just had to get that off my chest.

Haven’t been able to start the book yet but hope to this weekend. Who cares who writes about the band. Just be happy somebody is delving into this and telling the stories.
Considering Gord wrote the forward for his previous book, Have Not Been the Same, he obviously had a relationship with Barclay. That to me lends a ton of credence to this book, whether it's authorized or not. I just picked this up last night from Chapters in London. It appears that every Chapters, Indigo and Coles across Canada is carrying this now, and it's 10 dollars cheaper than the cover price at the moment. Can't wait to delve in. Have Not Been the Same was excellent, so I'm expecting similarly good things from this.

Exactly. Until the band writes their story (and we don't know that this will ever happen, although Rob has alluded to the idea), I'll happily take this book. I only care who writes about them in the sense that I want it to be a job well done. Barclay, given his familiarity with the Canadian music scene and with the band over the past 30 years (he attended Hip shows in the late 80's), seems like the right person for the task. Although the band has not specifically endorsed the book, I'm going to take Downie's writing of the foreword for Barclay's "Have Not Been the Same" book as tacit approval of Barclay as a music writer.
I'm halfway through reading it and am enjoying the hell out of it. While there's plenty of stories and facts we might be familiar with, I'm still learning lots as well. And, of course, Barklay's writing style is accessible and engaging. I hope this book becomes a source of discussion and debate on this forum for a long time.
Even if a band member writes a book, it won't necessarily be any more reliable than Barclay's would be. Could be considerably less reliable. Remember RB's remark about being a teller of tall tales. Or consider the admitted, radical unreliability of Buck 65's memoir. Don't trust the memoir-writers.*

*Where I *would* like to hear from artists is on the creative process itself. What was it like making album such-and-such? What was the creative process behind song A or B? I'm more apt to trust them on such matters than on anecdotes about life on the road, childhood stories, or whatever.

I'm a couple chapters in so far. Not to spoil anything, but the the Kato Kaelin story is hilarious.

Anyone remember the show "Classic Albums". Boy it sure would have been great to see The Hip on something like that. That was such a great show, I loved hearing the stories, arrangements, mixing process, individual interviews.

That was a great series. I own three of them on DVD: Nirvana's Nevermind, the Doors' self-titled, and the Joshua Tree. All of them are excellent.
Hey WesleyC! Here’s your book! Hipbase represented in the second paragraph of the book!
