For some reason this rubs me the wrong way. I think its going to the press with these plans when they havent even consulted the band yet ....plus, the lack of a large outdoor venue was never the problem. If the band wants to do a large outdoor free show, they could make it happen im sure. I can just see how this will be spun when it doesnt happen ...."the band doesnt want to play for free".
I agree -- politician looks like a hero by saying we'll host this free event, band/their management will be seen poorly by saying this does not fit into our plans. I think it's well intentioned, of course hosting a free show would be great for all those without tickets, but inconsiderate in that the politicians are ignoring that a band member has a terminal disease.
I think The Hip are doing what they can facing that reality, and it's not right to ask more of Gord and the band or put them in a negative position.
No to mention 30000 is not big enough. The amount of people that would flock to this would be much higher.
True. What if 100,000 people show up? 200,000? It could happen.
Here's another one. Depending on Gord's health at the end of this tour, I can't see the band actually participating in any of these. But you never know. Stranger things have happened.

This is a great idea, except for one tiny fact, the band deserves to be paid. A low cost $50-$70 show with 100k+ in attendance, plus a vip section, is very fair to fans, and if Gord can pull it off, compensates fairly the band.

yes absolutely and not only this, but i think the fact that the band is even touring at all at this point is remarkable. In the midst of all of this outrage, some people seem to be forgetting that we're talking about a terminally ill man here. This band doesnt OWE us a final tour, we're just incredibly lucky to get one. I doubt this insane demand for tickets is a huge surprise to the band. If a massive outdoor farewell show made sense, im sure they'd already have put the wheels in motion.

I believe the article mentioned the city would be paying the Hip, but no charge for the fans.

Yes, article said "with all costs for that band and fans covered by the city" sounds like they would pay the bands cost but not sure about the revenue-profit from such a big show.
The Hip only have a handful of shows left. Whatever their take on a $1.5M gross show is, they deserve their fee in addition to recouping cost. Not sure a politic can justify that to taxpayers.
i think an outdoor show at this point is a huge risk. If it gets rained out, it may not ever get rescheduled and that may be even more disappointing than not getting tickets. Maybe that factors into only playing arena shows as well
Yeah this is all really disheartening. The band's leading singer is dying. Let them go out their OWN way. These municipalities trying to set up free shows for themselves and going to the press about it is really thoughtless.
I'm sure the politicos are coming from a good place...but my god: Gord's dying. The Hip is already touring. Stop treating them like they're a public good.
The press really needs to get over this. They shouldn't even cover this nonsense. If the Hip wanted to do a large show or a free show they would have. They clearly had reasons for the venues and locations they picked. Now it looks bad when the band doesn't do it. Maybe they did arenas because they are close to hospitals in case they need that access. Last I checked stubhub had tickets to all the shows on the tour. If you want to go get out the credit card. What's a few hundred bucks in the grand scheme of things.

haha. Yes, if they do a massive farewell outdoor show, mississauga is clearly the location for it.
