After reading these posts then messing around on itunes for a few minutes, it appears you can change the nationality of your itunes store by simply clicking on the small flag-sphere in the bottom right corner of your itunes store... no? After changing mine to USA, I couldn't find any Gord Downie stuff. Upon changing it back to Canada, it was all there.

Thanks for the idea, but I have tried that in the past, I can view the other stores, but I am unable to purchase from the Canadian store.

I've exausted all options for trying to purchase the bonus track (The Dance and it's Disappearance, acoustic) from the Canadian version of ITunes. I think it's completely crazy that they would limit their sales like that. I'm sure they have some brilliant reason that I would never think of, but hey, it's just a file.

Changing the store was a good idea, it does let you see Gord's new disc, but it will not let you purchase anything from it.

Is there anyone out there that can help a fellow Hip fan out from the wrong side of the river? :jump

Also, someone mentioned there might be a third acoustic track...? Anyone know anything to flesh out that rumor?

GORD DOWNIE & THE COUNTRY OF MIRACLES -THE GRAND BOUNCE (Wiener Art, 2010)

Most Canadians have one point of reference for Gord Downie. He is the frontman of the Tragically Hip. They are one of the most iconic bands in Canada, and Downie is the face and voice of the band. Never content to rest on their laurels, the Hip have been pushing the boundaries of the classic "Hip sound" for the past ten years.


Downie's side project is a group of musical friends collectively referred to as The Country of Miracles. Dave Clark (drums) was the original drummer in the Rheostatics. Josh Finlayson (bass/guitar) is a founding member of the Skydiggers and Julie Doiron was a founding member of Eric's Trip. John Press (keyboards) and Dale Morningstar (guitar) also perform with Clark as a trio under the name Dinner is Ruined.

After the release of Downie's first two solo records, Coke Machine Glow (2001) and Battle of the Nudes (2003), there was a lengthy gap in solo output as the Tragically Hip nurtured lengthy tour schedules and a couple of redefining albums -World Container (2006) and We Are the Same (2009).

The Country of Miracles reconvened under the guidance of producer Chris Walla, also known for his work as guitarist with the band, Death Cab for Cutie. The album was recorded in two weeks last summer at the Hip's recording studio in Bath, Ontario.

The East Wind opens the album with what Walla calls "a thousand acoustic guitars." The lyrics quote from Walter Van Tillburg Clark's Western novel The Ox-Bow Incident and from Al Purdy's poem Necropsy of Love.

The Hard Canadian seems to suggest that the prototypical

Canadian hockey-fan needs to be a bit more vulnerable. The guitar- driven track sounds not unlike a Hip record, where the previous Downie solo recordings were more arty and, dare I say, difficult. The Hard Canadian sounds more accessible and should garner some radio airplay.

Yellow Days is about the brevity of Canadian summers, filled with rich memories. The sound is more experimental, riding a cool drum loop.

The Drowning Machine is about how people accidentally drown in the waterworks station on the Pow River in Alberta. The music is dark and disturbing with chiming electric guitars.

Pinned includes a recording of Downie's daughter playing piano and the sound of trains.


Other highlights include Doiron's vocals on Moon Over Glenora, the ambient sound of As A Mover and the rocking Night Is For Getting.

Retrace is a catchy song that has Downie singing in fine form, really stretching for the high notes with confidence. The old adage is that good music communicates something and Downie is a master storyteller with a compelling voice.

The Grand Bounce is an inspiring testament to what talented musicians can create when they are having fun together. This album is essential listening.

Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles perform in Belleville on Saturday June 19th as part of the Big Music Fest.

Gord Downie has done it all. He’s the biggest rockstar in Canadian music, fronting The Tragically Hip. He’s a published author. He’s acted in movies and on TV. And yet, he’s not content to just sit around and collect the SOCAN cheques for having the Hip’s “50 Mission Cap” play every five minutes on rock radio. He’s still writing gallons of songs, enough to not only release albums constantly with the Hip, but his solo band, the Country Of Miracles, too.

The newest from Downie’s solo effort, The Ground Bounce, is the third of his solo efforts, and perhaps most alike Downie’s work with The Hip; Quintessential Canadian rock music. And Canadian it is. In fact there’s even a song called “The Hard Canadian”.

The album was produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara) and surprisingly finds a comfortable production for Downie, better suited even to him than that of Bob Rock, who (unfortunately) has produced the last two Hip records.

And while this is considered by most to be a solo record, it’s important to not just shrug off The Country Of Miracles band, especially that of Julie Doiron’s contributions. Her vocals take the role of background, but together with Downie’s are perhaps one of the best pairings in recent memory.

From the summer-esque opener “The East Wind”, to the somber, closing track “Pinned” (the latter of which was recorded quietly on a train) The Grand Bounce goes to show it’s a good thing Downie is still making music, and not just sitting at home rolling in Loonies

the vinyl is beautiful, double lp 45 RPM, loving it!!! (and super fast shipping from maplemusic!)
