99. IBE
1-Day For Night
2-Day For Night
3-We Are The Same
The Horrible Esthete Wrote:99. IBE

I saw this album on a bunch of peoples top threes the other day, so I threw it on.
I could not believe how muddy it sounded - and how many of the tunes I could live without.
Kinda suprised myself because I never knew I really did not like this album until the other day.

I LOVE the sound of this album. It's so raw. I think it's one of the best sounding hip albums out, and I absolutely love the drums sounds on it. To each his own, I guess.
I forget where I heard this but Vaccination Scar was recorded with the whoel band playing at once together to get a raw sound. I love it, they should do it more often.

This has always been a difficult choice for me. This time round I'm going to say.

1991 - Road Apples
2006 - World Container
1996 - Trouble in the Henhouse

A close call would be the 1987 - EP
Does anyone like Cemetary SideRoad here? The sound reminds me of The Phantoms and concerts at Lee's Palace back in the late 80's.
1. Road Apples
2. Whatever album Radio Show would have been on.
3. Phantom Power/Up To Here
4. Fully Completely would have been #1 for me if that Chris guy with the weird last name didn't produce it. I think he is "as bad as or worse" than Bob Rock, with respect to that polished, glam rock sound.
Does anyone remember how great Meridean, Courage, and 50 Mission Cap sounded in Barrie on Canada Day (92) before they went off to England to ruin their great work.
I don't understand the arguement of changing something that already works. How many business' go under because of re-inventing the wheel?
I was thinking this morning that the Hip's intimate show at the Bathouse would have been completely sold out accross the country in 92. Yes, that was pre-internet, Napster, Oink (what the fuck is Oink), or whatever other music stealing options their are today. Does anyone (who was born at the time) agree with that point...meaning you remember how diehard people were then.
Anyways, I am not sticking with the point of this thread so I will go now.
Sorry that you are such a Violet, you may have missed the glory days.

Funny, I hadn't listened to this album in a long time, so I threw it on last night as I was making dinner. I couldn't agree more. I love the raw sound of a band recording live off the floor as much as the next guy, but this album definitely has a muddy sound to it. In a way, it's almost too raw, and it kinda sounds like the band didn't get a chance to finish it. Some of the songs are excellent (Gus, Josephine, Nashville, Makeshift, Heart of the Melt, Are We Family), but to me the rest of the album sounds like a collection of unfinished ideas. In comparison I decided to throw on three other albums that Adam Kasper produced: Pearl Jam's self-titled, Soundgarden's Down on the Upside, and The Watchmen's Silent Radar. Those albums have a raw feel as well, but they're also a lot "warmer" and have a slicker, more polished sound than IBE. It's almost as if Kasper spent more time and effort on those records than he did with the Hip. Perhaps he only had a small window to work with them and was pressed for time, so he just set up quickly and recorded them on the fly. Somebody mentioned this in another thread, and I totally agree with their assessment: IBE sounds more like a band rehearsal than a finished album.

Anyways, here's my top 3:

1. PP
2. DFN
3. RA

I have to admit though, WATS is closing in quickly on my #3 spot.

I was there for the "glory days" and I agree it was fantastic. Those early albums will always have a special place in my heart and my soul. So many great memories. But the Hip have come a long way since then, especially in the songwriting department. I think they're a much better band today than they ever were back then.
I got caught up doing something...I meant to say that I was sorry for Violet being such a recent fan because the early days were something special. Are they a better band now? We could argue that one forever. I certainly think their live sound was better in the early days. But, just my taste, and likely the same with some other folks. Say what you want about the band, the fact remains that they were a bigger draw 15 years ago. I couldnt believe how empty the theatre was for their premiere show. Is that just coincidence? Do you remember how hard it was to get a ticket for their fully tour at the gardens?
come on bakersbrew! the taste of the masses is no measure of quality. duh!

Phew! I thought that bashing FC for over-production had gone extinct with the advent Bob Rock-WC-WATS.

As for my ranking, shelving everything before the Year 2000 (so that I only have to feel like I'm choosing between children, and not grandchildren too):

1. IBE
2. WATS
3. WC
