Hey, does anybody know who's producing the new record? I mean, I know they haven't said officially, but then that's never stopped this board before. Like everyone, I'm really pumped about the new stuff!

Glenn Ballard is the god-awful pop music producer who completely ruined Shelby Lynne's old-world country, and Dave Matthews' deep and powerful rock. He's basically become known for sabotaging artists' integrity by creating pop records that sell well for them. Shelby's and Dave's last albums were the worst of their careers, and it was the first time either artist was criticisedby the media!
I would march down there and bitch-slap some sense into Gord if he inexplicably decided to hire Ballard... :rambo:
Really I can see why! Why would artists choose to work with him? Don't they know his track record? I thought at first you where going to say "he has worked with Britney Spears" or something :twisted:

Well, the artists know what they want when they go to him. They hit this mid-life crisis and desperately need a shake up, and they go to him. I don't know if you're a Dave Matthews fan, but he's a classic example - he was writing songs he didn't really like (which ended up being the absolutely brilliant Lillywhite Sessions bootleg), so he went out to California and ditched the 8-minute orchestral rockers in favour of a bunch of 3-minute pop songs all co-written by Ballard.
He didn't work with Britney...but he was the guy behind early Alanis Morrissette, if that tells you anything. He's like the Shock And Awe Campaign of pop music. A purely evil moneymaking genius!

I know!!!! The songs on Lillywhite rule, i love that album but then when I heard the revised versions on Busted Stuff I was sooo dissappointed :?
All the things which made Lillywhite great were changed so the tunes would appeal to a larger mainstream audience...yuck. :rambo:
No I am not a Dave Matthews fan, but I can see how that would be disappointing!

I think he has had the TOP-GROSSING tour for like the past half a decade. He's a multi, multi, multi millionaire!! What the hell does he need to appeal to a pop audience for...
I guess the days of Neil Young and Bob Dylan, when an artist was willing to sabotage their popularity to make what they wanted to (Bob's Christian stuff and Neil's electronica experiements), are so far behind us that today's musicians can't imagine it. Of course, our very own Gord has done the right thing...un-Hip-like music that's still awesome, but it's a gamble for him!
PS: I totally agree about the album "Busted Stuff". I expected a little bit of polishing on the songs, but Dave ended up draining all the dark emotional power out of EVERY SONG by re-recording them. Lillywhite Sessions will always be his last great album!!
I put those names on as a joke believing the hip would not sell out. Also Bob Rock was the one who ruined Metallica (produced the "black" album) and Mutt Lange is the not so creative mind that created Shania.
I don't want to start a whole big argument here but as far as I know, Dave went to the label with the stuff from the Lillywhite sessions and they told him it wasn't radio friendly and that it was too dark (recorded at the height of his drinking problems) and then the record company set him up with Ballard.
I guess the point is we DEFINITELY do not want some crappy pap producer ruining the unique and complex sound we have come to respect and love from our beloved boys. I have always hoped they might let Steven Drake (Odds) produce an album. Or what about Brendan Mcguire , who produced Sam Roberts "Born In A Flam" album. I thought that album was definitely tight.
