Actor Heath Ledger Is Found Dead
By Sewell Chan
The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.
At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play and said they found pills near body.
Mr. Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”
Calls by The New York Times to Mara Buxbaum, a publicist for Mr. Ledger, and Steve Alexander, the actor’s agent, were not immediately returned this afternoon.
Thomas J. Lueck contributed reporting.
Sad.. hopefully it wasn't a suicide. Tragic end to a short life
This is sad...
...but personally, I just realized that I get my news from the Hipbase forums.
that's fucked up...and so sad...so young, and a really great talent....for some reason this is really hitting me, like i almost lost a friend..being around my age, and following his career since it started...fucked...up..
So sad.
RIP Heath
Godspeed
what i think is sad is that a 22 year old kid here in vancouver died at work building the canada line yesterday and a bigger deal is made about another famous person surrounded by pills dying. if someone dies surrounded by pills ultimately their choices, actions and decisions put them six feet under.
does this now make brokeback mountain jokes offside?

That's society though. American Dad the other week made some good social commentary (I thought) with the episode that talked about Celebrity Babies.
Don't get me wrong, it is sad and a horrible thing for his family and friends.
I'm just curious if any of our American friends on the board know about what just happened in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

This might be out of line....but I felt I had to
Sad news. The guy was a terrific actor. His turn as The Joker in the upcoming Batman flick looks amazing. He might even out-do Nicholson. Check it out:

It's sad when anyone dies so untimely, for whatever the reasons. I think however that Ledger is a celebrity that deserves attention. He was very talented and had a great body of work. Its unfortunate we won't be able to see what would have been a great career.

Or what about the two pedestrians on the streets of Toronto that were caught in crossfire and killed in the last two weeks.

Or the 14 year old stabbed by a 17 year old and a 14 year old and left to die by the side of the road on New Year's Day?

The public has an appetite for all things celebrity - and his ability as an actor really doesn't matter. It's just that he's a celebrity. We have a culture that has made people household names for doing nothing other than hanging around other famous people - Federline, Paris Hilton, etc. That's

By that token, anyone who dies in a workplace accident is a victim of his own decision to avoid workplace safety and failure to invoke the right to refuse unsafe work. Anyone who dies of cancer or heart disease is a victim of his own lifestyle choices. Anyone who dies in a car accident is a victim of his own decision to drive a car, and furthermore probably a victim of his own negligence.
And anyone who dies by suicide, of course, well fuck him.
Fuck 'em all, in fact. People die every day, right?
Thanks for giving me a new perspective.

Which leads me to my credo...Never Trust Frenchmen!!!
I don't understand people's negative sentiment towards celebrity deaths, injuries or setbacks. Is it not natural that someone whom is well-loved or at the very least well known, would recieve more public attention than someone unkown to the general public (regardless of how tragic the situation or innocent the victims). The fact is a celebrity death resonates much more with the public as a whole than the deaths of say, a young man killed at work. That said, I believe this is a huge loss to American cinema. I can't wait to see him in the new Batman movie, Dire Wolf I was just arguing with my buddy the other day that he looks amazing as the Joker in this and could possibly out do Nicholson. Has anybody here seen Brokeback Mountain? I've heard conflicting stories about how good it was and haven't had a chance to see it myself.
