Would love for it to have a firewire connection as well but you really can't complain when that's what you're paying for 500gigs!
Unless you are doing intensive video processing the USB 2.0 connection is sufficient... and faster than FireWire 400.
I'm tempted to get a second one; Tiger Direct has had them for that price for a while.

Cheap laptops are cheap laptops. What do you want/need it for? TigerDirect has been advertising all kinds of really cheap laptops... but as I said, they are cheap laptops.

I find they are great for backup/storage but you can't really work on files in Photoshop/Illustrator/Lightroom from the drive...too slow.
But like I said, wonderful, inexpensive drive for backup though!
Weird... I'm able to work with multiple, multi-gigabyte files at the same time off mine without issue or delay. Are you connected directly or through a hub? If there's a hub, maybe that is the bottleneck? If not... I dunno.

I have more than one of these drives.
I have found that all, when connected by a USB cable (different ones too) directly into the back of my iMac, is about half the speed of a firewire cable. I thought at one point that it was only running on USB 1.1 but I dunno.

No it's not. The iMac I have has 3 USB 2.0 ports on the back and 2 USB 1.1 ports on the keyboard. I knew that.
Yvan has had the same problem with his PowerMac G4....
