For the holidays DivX is giving away Pro versions of their software for free, if any one is interested:

I find they are great for backup/storage but you can't really work on files in Photoshop/Illustrator/Lightroom from the drive...too slow.
But like I said, wonderful, inexpensive drive for backup though!
Which one would you recommend out of the previous (LaCie) and these two:

What characteristics differentiate them for the casual user?
What do you want the drive for? The two that you linked have One-Touch back-up so you push the button and some software runs and backs-up everything from your main hard drive to the external. Great if you want it for back-up, useless if not.
Looks, included software and brand are the other differentiators.
Thanks for the info.
I'm looking for a larger drive (my laptop only holds 40GB) for random data storage (FLACs, pics, videos, databases). With 500GB I would probably like to move most software I use also (Stata, Matlab, Autocad) onto it. The small amount of space on my laptop has been a source of frustration, as I'm continuously backing everything up on 700MB discs.
I take it LaCie is an ok brand in your opinion since you recommended it.
They all are OK... but externals are generally not suited for running the applications from. Store the files, work on files, etc, but running programs can be problematic as their transfer speeds and consistency might cause you problems. As well, many programs will not operate from drive that doesn't contain the operating system.
And I went with a Lacie because I've used them in the past, and the price was right!

Cheap laptops are cheap laptops. What do you want/need it for? TigerDirect has been advertising all kinds of really cheap laptops... but as I said, they are cheap laptops.
Yeah, thanks Chris. I've had my eyes on Tiger Direct for a while. I'm going to pick up a refurbished HP Pavilion dv2415nr. Anyone have any experience with this computer?
I have an HP laptop very similar to that. It may actually be the same, the specs seem very similar. Anyhow, it's treated me fairly well, though I'm really not a huge fan of Vista. It's a bit of a memory pig and seems to experience a bit of slowdown when running multiple applications. However, on the whole I can't complain, I'm yet to experience any major crashes or problems (knock on wood) and my semester went by smoothly using this as my work computer.
Hope that helps in some way, shape, or form!
