64 of your favourite Tragically Hip songs square off in a one-on-one bracket-style tournament. Everyday you select which song you think is better, by voting in a one-day long poll. If you want your favourite song to stay in, you need to vote for it or else it will be knocked out by a B-side!

Song selection for the Tournament: After viewing the recent concert song stats, considering "Yer Favourites", and reading your "favourite song on each album", I compiled a list of 64 songs (all potentially worthy of being the last song standing). This was a very difficult task, as there are easily more than 64 great Hip songs, so several had to be left out*.

Match-ups: Every song has been randomly assigned to a match-up, to ensure there are no biases. This makes the tournament legitimate, and completely randomized - ensuring a maximum amount of credibility.

Voting: Every 24 hours a new match-up will appear. Before you carelessly cast your vote, I ask you to listen to the two songs in the match-up Back to Back, and consider the lyrics of the song. Feel free to post any unbiased remarks about both songs in this thread, but please refrain from cheerleading for your favourites. There are some match-ups that will pitt your two favourite songs against each other. Please do not feel as if you are choosing between your two children. Select the song that you think is better as at this very moment.

I ask you all to please participate in this event. Remember that this is just for fun, and the winner is not considered the Best Hip Song of All Time, but rather the Hipbase consenus for the best song under these specific circumstances at this very point in time. Let the Hipbase March Madness begin!

______________
*If your favourite song did not make it into the tournament, and if there is substantial participation in the tournament, I will consider a relegation system for next year, where non-tournament songs will replace some of the current first round knockouts.

Sounds like some fun...I'm just hoping for a UVM vs Syracuse type of knockout
a fine march into spring… :thumb:
What a great idea!

I already have in mind, a track that I think can't be beat, but in fairness to the competition, I'll keep my choice to myself.

It will be interesting to note the songs that go down, and in what order. Could make for a killer playlist :thumb:

Also curious to see which album carries the most "Top 10" tunes in the end!
wow, this is going to be great, very interesting. kicks off tomorrow morning!

An honour and a privilege to be the first person to vote in March Madness...

I like this match-up; it makes sense. Released four years after ABAC, lyrically, Lake Fever seems to be a bit of a progression. The young couple Gord seemed to be romanticizing in ABAC has moved on from that first kiss in a tree onto some heavy petting beside the lake. They also appear to be confronting the type of serious issues that come with age. Wait, that can't be right. Serious issues are things like mortgages, not cholera epidemics. Anyway.

I hope this doesn't count as cheerleading; I heard Lake Fever for the first time, as I'm sure nearly everyone did, at my first show on New Years Day, 2000. I kinda thought it paled in comparison to the Bastard, but I did like the acoustic feel of the tune. I always thought the song could've benefitted if they'd kept it strictly acoustic. Maybe could've become the new ABAC, or whatever.

Again, cool idea man.
I was about to put in my vote, but decided to wait until tomorrow when I can play the songs loud, and perhaps then play a few live versions of each. I allready think I know what I want to vote for, but maybe after some sleep I can make a more informed decision.
After listening, I thought that Lake Fever has better/deeper lyrics than ABAC, but the special vibe you get from ABAC is something to be considered also.
I voted, but I'tl remain a secret ballot so I don't unfluence...I guess
14-12 as it stands now. to be honest i'm a little surprised how close this first match up is. i won't say which song i voted for but i would have expected ABAC to be the winner hands down.

Do you have a bracket style chart you could post...I think it would be cool to see which song has won (or been beaten), and to see upcoming match-ups in a March Madness style chart.
Just a thought.

thats another good idea. i have a question as well. whats happens in the event of a tie?
It was a tough, tough decision but I absolutely love the "wanna be your roaring floorboards.." and stars of Algonguin lines in Lake Fever.
Hmmm, if you'd have asked me this about three weeks ago, it would have been a no brainer in favour of Lake Fever. However, ABAC has really been growing on me over the last fortnight or so.

That said, I'm still going to have to go with Lake Fever.
