Any ideas on converting from 24 bit to 16 bit, or will the 24 still burn to cdr and play in most players?

I'll post a 16bit version as soon as I complete the download.

It won't play for most people - it needs to be converted. The how-to is dependent on what audio software you have.

What do you mean by audio software? The software to convert (like flac) or the software to play the music - Winamp, etc..?

What do you mean by audio software? The software to convert (like flac) or the software to play the music - Winamp, etc..?

I'm a Mac guy so I can only speak to the Mac programs I'm familiar with....

For example, Quicktime Pro can play and convert 24 bit to 16 bit.

I have started to use a program called SoX (Sound Exchange). Its free and can convert 24-bit flac files to 16-bit flac files on the fly (or to 16-bit MP3 files or another else). You can download it here:

The syntax to convert from the 24-bit flac file to the 16-bit flac file is:

sox input_file -b 16 output_file rate 44100 dither -s

For example

sox e:\converted\tth2009-06-22set1t01.flac -b 16 e:\converted\tth2009-06-22set1t01-converted.flac rate 44100 dither -s

I wrote a little batch file that converted the whole show at once. I can post that if anyone is interested.

And yes SoX is also available for the MAC Genuises. :-)

Why do a bunch of "good" tapers record at 24-bits? Is it just because they can - or is there that noticeable of a difference listening to it through a good pair of speakers/soundcard hooked up to your computer. Because a computer is kinda the only way to listen to those files.

For DVD Audio and yes there is a difference.

Listen to the Neil Young live disc Sugar Mountain from the 16 bit cd version then listen to the 24 bit DVD Audio Disc and hear for yourself the difference in quality.

24-bits recording also gives a lot more "head room" meaning the "good taper" can record the levels a little lower than
a 16-bit taper and boost the volume in post-production. If a 16-bit taper records low levels and then tries to boost the
volume of the recording in post, hiss can be introduced. A lot of the time I'm multitasking, so some shows I just push record and "set it and forget it".

Also you can definitely notice a difference in 24-bit vs 16-bit recordings with a high-end stereo system and a good pair of ears, neither of which I have.
