WJHC Gold Medal Game
#31

Quote: The goal judge didnt see it go in. the ref didnt see it go in. the only way we know it went in is because of the net cam. the russians didnt even know it went in until it was shown on TV, and undoubtedly some dude in the russian locker room was watching it on TSN and ran to the bench to inform the coaching staff. the russians didnt even complain about it until a few play stoppages later. at that point theres nothing anyone can do.
It wasn't the Russians who alerted the ref about the play, it was the off-ice video replay official who called down and discussed with the ref the play in concern. However, before the video replay official called down, play had resumed thereby negating any chance a goal could be awarded. It was after talking to the off-ice official that the ref then went to both benches and explained the situation.

You make good points there bean. Strictly speaking, if everything went as it should have, then the right call would have been a goal for Russia. But it's not fair to hang this on the ref since the play moved so quickly he could never be in the right position, and the puck went in and out so fast it was hard for the goal judge to tell. Bad break for the Russians, but there was nothing anyone could have done the way things are set up now.

This brings me to a very good point Miller and Maguire made on the TSN broadcast (yes I know I'm defending them again and I know a lot of you don't like them but bear with me). They said at high-level hockey like this there is no way one referee can hope to keep up with everything, and they are absolutely right. The IIHF really should go to a two-ref system like the NHL has done. And then they have to train the heck out of these guys because of course the fear is that instead of one lousy international ref, you have two lousy refs! But the fact is, hockey moves too fast for one man to do a good job as referee. Chances are, if there were two refs, that one of them would have been in the right position to award Russia the goal.

Although in this case I'm glad there wasn't because the break worked out in Canada's favour. But I think you see my point here.

*edit* Having just seen tommygunn's point, the question now becomes why didn't the video replay official call down earlier. Oh well, the point is moot now...

Yes, that is why I mentioned needing better video replay procedures. This was a gold medal game and for this to happen is a travesty (regardless of the eventual score).

5-0 win or 5-1 win, it doesn't matter. They won gold and that's what matters. Whether Pogee got 2 shut outs or 3 shut outs, it's still amazing what he did. Rask is a good goalie and stopped a lot of shots but he gives up too many rebounds. I thought Pogee deserved goalie of the tournament. He had 3 shut outs and played amazing!!

I thought so to, until I saw him with his ball cap on crooked like some G-UNIT thug...I'm sure Brent Sutter was doing a slow burn when he saw that. I just wanted to run on the ice, give him a "high 5" and straighten the punk's hat.

I'm sure you must realize why that non-goal was important HIP11....a 2-1 game in the 2nd period is considerably different than a 2-0 game, especially when you realize that you just got screwed over.

No one gave them a chance going in, yet they took on the character of their coach Brent Sutter, worked hard and got the job done when it counted the most. Outstanding team play, defensive strength, great goaltending, and timely offence... THAT'S how you win gold, boys and girls!!

WAY TO GO CANADA!! YOU ARE GOLDEN!!!

So how long before replace coach Crawford with coach Sutter? He'll have a premium price tag right now, but he's currently the only coach who's ever won anything on Vancouver home ice. Besides, though I'm not sure about this, but coaches salaries don't count against the cap, correct?

j-monster Wrote:tiger... I'm on record here as saying I like Pierre Maguire (and I like Miller as well), so maybe I'm not unbiased here, but I don't think their commentary has been biased or disgraceful at all. They've been calling a good game and have called it fair. I saw what happened to that Russian taking smelling salts... and Maguire was right, that WAS fraudulent. He was barely touched if you saw the replay... it was all a big show by the Russians.

Downie is not a coward, he is a pest, and to claim he has dived 4 times or so is ridiculous. At most he embellished the first of two penalties taken on him in the second period... and if he did embellish it then he shouldn't have. The second penalty he clearly got cross-checked. I don't know what your beef is with Downie but I wish I had him on my team even after this tournament.

I have to say you are absolutely correct about the Russians being screwed out of a goal in the second period... it clearly went in. Clearly the IIHF has a lot of work to do to improve their video replay or whatever led to that bad mistake. Canada got very lucky on that, and who knows how it would have changed the game... but my guess based on how the game has unfolded is that the Canadians still would have been well out in front, as you pointed out at the end of their post.

YAY CANADA!!

I agree with everything you said, I love Maguire and Miller and Downie had to be my favourite player of the tournamnet. And it doesn't bother me at all that Pierre Maguire is so pro Canadian, as mentioned before the games are broadcast on a Canadian network and the tournament was in Canada. I get so pumped up when Maguire starts yellin about something. WAY TO GO CANADA!!!!!

All that is well and good except for the fact that IF IT WAS CANADA who scored and the goal didn't count, there would have been an uproar. In the words of Bob Mackenzie (who was the only guy on TSN with any integrity apparently), "If the situation were reversed with Canada trailing 2-0, it would have been the Canadian side going ballistic."

I'm pretty sure most of you guys would be bitching about the goal that didn't count if it happened to Canada when they were down 2-0.

All I would like is a little bit of unbiased, neutral opinion. I don't care if it was Canada, Finland, USA, Russia, or Switzerland that this happened to. A goal was scored and it didn't count. That's the bottom line. That's a travesty.

Does anybody elase find it hard to watch the NHL now? It just doesn't have the energy or urgency. I suppose we were spoiled for a week or so. We're golden again. Bring on the Olympics!

I was thinking the same thing when I was watching some of the games today. A lot of it looked like they were going thru the motions.
