Just a question for some of you Hip followers that have heard multiple covers on this tour. Before they started their cover song, did they introduce the name of it? (i.e. song title, and original artist?) In Winnipeg the just jumped right into "2000 Light Years", with no introduction.
If they never introduce their covers, then perhaps they are planning on releasing a Hip Covers album, because it would be easier to blend crowd cheering into one another, without having to cut out Gord's introduction to the covers...

In Grande Prairie he named the song, but not in Edmonton or Red Deer. I doubt that's any indication of what they'll do with regard to releasing them, though. Also, this was my idea first.

I think that the licensing/rights issues for an "all-covers" album might keep this one from ever seeing the light of day.

Hey, Rage did it! Then again, I suppose they had way more money to work with. The Hip are mostly choosing obscure/presumably friendly artists, though, so it might be possible.

Acutally licensing is really easy to do.
There is a site called CMRRA that collects royalties for cover songs.
8.5 cents per track for songs under 6 minutes or something like that. I work with one artist who did a cover of River by Joni and I had to go through CMRRA to get it authozied for production. We have compulsory licensing in the States, too. It costs 9.1 cents for every copy produced (for a song under 5 minutes).

Unless you can get releases from all the publishers involved, paying the licensing fees for 10+ songs pretty much eats up all the profits for the band. This type of album would more than likely have to be a labor of love rather than a commercial venture.
