Hi guys.
I'm new to the Hip, only recently discovered them via the Pearl Jam tenclub forum where there is about a 50+ page positive thread about the Hip in the other music section, being noisy I started reading the thread and liked what I was reading and ordered 'Yer Favourates'. I like it alot and now i'm pretty sure I'm going to buy up all the albums.
The problem is i'm from the UK and the albums are pretty much import only also i'm between jobs at the minute so cash is pretty tight and I can only afford an album every so often. So if you hardcore fans could give me alittle more info about which albums are the considered the strongest and ones that generally aren't so highly regarded i'd be grateful. (I know opinions generally vary, but normally there are a few albums most love and a few that are generally concidered weaker by the fans).

Welcome to The Tragically Hip, and welcome to Hipbase......
From what I've read on this forum over the years, the concensus seems to be that Fully Completely, Day for Night and Phantom Power are among the band's strongest records. They are The Hip's 3rd, 4th and 6th full-length studio albums, respectively. I agree that these are excellent records
I personally think that Road Apples and Trouble at the Henhouse are every bit as solid as the aforementioned records.
My suggestion (and a strong one at that) would be to start with Up to Here, the first full-length record, and then aquire the subsequent records in chronological order:
Up to Here
Road Apples
Fully Completely
Day for Night
Trouble at the Henhouse
Phantom Power
Music @ Work
In Violet Light
In Between Evolution
World Container
There is an EP that precedes these releases, which I think is weak and would not even recommend getting until you've acquired all the full-length records (if ever). There is also a live record (Live Between Us) which is good, but non-essential, IMO.

I'm fully on side with Esthete's suggestion; however I would also suggest that you familiarize yourself with Bit Torrent, and then join our Bit Torrent site where you can download fan-produced live recordings of their concerts.

Thanks for the help, unfortunantly right now i'm reduced to a 56k dialup modem at the minute, which as you can imagine is somewhat of a pain when downloading anything of a decent size (songs for example!).
I was thinking about Phantom Power or In Violet Light first using the legend in Yer Favourates the songs on those two albums seemed very good. But keep the suggestions coming please!
Oh and just out of interest were you aware you The Hip seem to have a huge following in the Pearl Jam community? Sorry if you really hate Pearl Jam!

i think Fully Completely would be a good place to start - its not overly dark; so it kind of encompasses what the hip is about. After that, id move on to Road Apples, then Day For Night - which is theyre best album.

I really don't think you can neglect "Live Between Us", their live record from 1997...It documents The Hip during what was likely their best tour, and although it's only one disc, it's got this incredible vibe...It's one of those records that is best listened to front to back, no stops...And you won't find a better record for road trips/train trips....Anyway, just my opinion...
