Sued after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler
In January 2000, Kathleen Robertson of Austin Texas was awarded $780,000.00 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amuck inside a furniture store.
The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving tyke was Ms. Robertson's son.


Sued a restaurant after she slipped on a spilled drink
In May 2000, a Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania $113,500.00 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor because Ms. Carson threw it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

thats a pretty interesting website. Some interesting points about tort reform, and the pros and cons of it. Even though those two cases never happened and some others on the site I linked to, it does show how some people will try sue over just about anything.

In the States there is a serious problem with frivolous lawsuits. Not so in Canada, because if you sue someone in Canada and lose, you're paying his court costs.

Suddenly, suing Tim Hortons for not printing a warning that donuts are fattening doesn't seem like such a good idea.
