Golf - Sport or Game?
#1

I remember in high school where my friends and I would debate at lunch whether Golf should be considered a professional sport...or just a game. I remember a lot of people having little respect for the skill level that is required for Golf.

Maybe a better question is, what makes/defines a 'sport' or 'game'?

What do you guys think?

Here's to a good weekend.

It's not a sport unless you sweat. I'll agree that golf requires a lot of skill, but it's still just a game. Nothing more.

I always went by the belief that a "sport" requires defense. If there is no defensive play then it is not a sport, it is a game.

If this is the case, golf would be considered a game, along with bowling, darts. etc

Yes, it does take an incredible amount of skill, and I love playing it (even though I suck donkey dorks at it) but I still would classify it as a game........

just my two cents

i took the "history of sport" in university and i think there were four qualifications to "sport."
i forget them specifically, but remember at least two being "competitiveness" and "athleticism."

you don't have to be "athletic" to play golf at a high level.

yes, it requires skill, hand-eye coordination and all that wonderful stuff but if that makes it a sport then i guess pinball is too.

non sports: golf, darts, snooker/pool, bowling etc.

and while i recognize the likes of david wells and cecil fielder excell(ed) in baseball, that's a positional game and several the majority of positions require athleticism.

Its called the Game of Golf, so I guess it is a game. I think for the most part athletes play it though. except for maybe craig stadler and Tim herron.

I sweat when I play golf in the summer time

i don't buy the "sweating" argument either. is walking to the ice-cream store in blazing heat a sport? how about putting up drywall?

It requires your whole body to move together to achieve success. Not fair to compare it to Pinball- I know your joking but man that's just mean to golfers :rambo: :rambo:

Speaking of golf, I won a silent auction at work to Play at the National Golf Club next year., #1 ranked club in the country.

If you can provide an indisputable definition of "sport" and "game" I'll tell you what golf is.

Sport or game, I love playing it. I picked up my clubs from my club this week and it was tough resigning myself to the next four months being golf-free.

you hit a little white ball then you find it and hit it again . what you should do is when you find your ball be thankful you found and go home

i'm trying to find out why you deem the whole "body to move together to achieve success" thing has anything to do with anything.
same is required to put up drywall.

it's not being "mean" either.
i'm in awe of some of the shots snooker players make, in awe of how easy the dartists can hit "triple 20" -- saying it's not a "sport" doesn't take away from the skill involved. it's just that athleticism's not involved.

But if that is your basis, where do you put Curling?

Personally, golf is a game, not a sport...

i don't buy the defense arguement...there's no defense in most Olympic sports...

and if ballroom dancing, ice dancing, and that stupid ribbon twirling thing are sports, then Golf is a sport.
