Martime Music - Best of The New Bands.
#1

Being out west we are stuck with crap bands all trying to sound like Nickelback.

When i used to work in radio out here a certain rock station would run its home grown music contest... most bands would be a Nickelback clone or be as bad as the Armchair Cynics.... but that didn't stop the judges from choosing them to be the best of the best or in my opinion teh best of the worst.

So what i am getting at is Music from BC sucks and that the good bands out here hardly get noticed. It seems like it's a different story out east.

The music coming out of the Maritimes is excellent.

Matt Mays & El Torpedo, The Novaks, The Trews and now i have come across In-Flight Safety. While at times they sound like Coldplay their sound is such a refreshing change from the crap we are producing out here.

I would definitely check them out.

Can anyone out there recommend any other new Maritime rock, roots rock or alt-country bands that are worth checking out?

Radio in Vancouver wont give them the time of day as they are too busy trying to break the next Nickelback.

Joel Plaskett is great, even if he isn't new. "Natural Disaster" is so good it hurts. Honestly there aren't really other bands from the maritimes that I really love. Slowcoaster, Grand Theft Bus, and Jimmy Swift Band all have played on PEI quite a bit. The Rude Mechanicals are from PEI but I'm not even sure if they still make music or not. kleh's buddy, Nathan Wiley, is from PEI and has opened for Gord Downie and Sarah Harmer.

The problem with music in the maritimes (from what I observed when I lived out there) is that a lot of bands end up becoming "bar bands" and can't get past that. So for those guys like Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, etc., to be able to bypass the "bar band" stage and hit it big across Canada is a huge feat.

I have yet to see any of the bar bands I used to go see emerge as a top 10 artist here in Canada. The only one close would be Crush. Paul Lamb was in Signal Hill (played at the Lower Deck a lot) and Corey Tetford was a solo artist. And I don't think I would put them in a top 10!

It seems that their is never a shortage or Jam Bands across the maritimes. I think a large part of the reason is because of the growing popularity of Evolve festival in my home town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The festival kicks off it's seventh year tomorrow. This year featuring K-Os and Mike Gordon (Bass player from Phish).

Mike Gordon!!!!!!!!Favorite bass player of all time. Joel Plaskett has to stop trying to win over Canada...and get the hell down to the states and tour constantly....as does the hip.
