Okay, it used to be that you were not allowed to bring in any recording devices to any live concert - cameras, video cameras, taping devices, etc. It was always written right on the ticket.
Why then, all of a sudden is it allowed? Is it a fairly recent thing? Is it just the Hip that do it? Is it only allowed in outdoor venues and not in theatres/arenas?
Also, does the band not lose out on sales this way by allowing people to record their shows?
I wasn't really aware that taping at concerts occurred (legally). So to the guy I was standing beside while I was singing on Saturday night (who I assume now, was taping the show), I'm really, really sorry! :oops: Don't worry, I wasn't that loud. I'm a crappy singer and didn't want anyone to hear.

Many, many bands allow taping now.
Check out this site for a very large, partial list, of "taping friendly" bands. This site only allows bands that allow taping.

You're right, most concerts I've been to have not allowed audio recorders. Cameras are usually allowed, but there have been times where I've had to leave mine behind. I think as recording technology gets more common (cell phones, etc.) that they're finding people are recording things that weren't supposed to be recorded anyways.
I don't think album sales would noise dive simply because of live recordings. Most people are only interested in 15 different live recordings of NOIS when they're a real, true fan who has already purchased all the albums (and probably countless concert tickets). With the internet the way it is, I'd say that plays a bigger role in declined CD sales.
I think recording the shows is awesome, and I'm glad that there are such recording out there for the diehard fans to appreciate.

The Grateful Dead made billions of dollars because they let their fans record their shows and trade them, which, as srb said, spread the word and got millions of people into their music. Hell, they even used to set up booths in back of the stage for people to set up their tape recorders and such. I think letting fans record shows is one of the best marketing devices a band can use, and I guess a lot more bands today are realizing it.

Phish and The Grateful Dead have been able to continually grow their fanbase because of fan recordings. And the taping/trading community is huge!
I really doubt that a record label could prove that fan recordings have any negative impact on CD sales. I read an article in McLeans/Time/Profit/etc in a waiting room a couple of weeks ago that detailed the impact of Wal*Mart on CD sales. Wal*Mart is content to use CDs as a loss leader, just to bring more people into the stores. Whenever the music industry cite declining sales figures, they always use dollars, instead of units. Wal*Mart have driven down the selling price of CDs dramatically, and the figures that the article quoted equated Wal*Mart pricing to the North American revenue reduction.
But back to fan recordings; check out the area in front of the soundboard at an upcoming show and you'll probably see at least one taper.

Hi thompson girl, I think you were beside me. I noticed you singing along, and that was great. You did not affect my recording in anyway.
I usually like to stay out of the way of people trying to enjoy the concert.
But I do get the occasionally person that jumps up and yells 'Are you taping?'
