They played it with a different intro, and then busted out into the "actual" version about one minute in. Brilliant!

The performance is contained in the SNL Box Set "25 Years Of Music". What a great Christmas present that was a few years back.

My top three all come from ACL:

Tom Waits - recorded 1979, I saw it replayed sometime in the late 80's or very early 90's during a pledge drive. It was a dramatic, theatrical peformance, absolutely riveting. Kept thinking about it for days and days after I saw it. I had actually set the VCR to record the other artist they were replaying an old episode from, and that episode was:

Neil Young (& the International Harvesters) - recorded 1985, classic,"county style" Neil - wore this black brimmed Harley Davidson hat, which cast a shadow over he eyes they couldn't be seen...and good ol' Neil would mumble about things in between great song after great song. Loved it. I was also completely floored by:

Stevie Ray Vaughn - recorded 1983....absolutely ferocious. Watching this guy tear it up is like watching someone undergo an exorcism, except the "demons" are some of the most soulful notes ever to emerge from steel-wound strings. They sell this one on DVD (I own a copy), but the cover makes no mention of ACL -- just "Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble / Live From Austin, Texas". If you want to get your ass kicked by incredible guitar performance, pick it up.

Radiohead playing "The National Anthem" on SNL. Great performance, it's the one where Thom goes completely insane on stage near the end.

Also Guided By Voices on Austin City Limits. I had never even heard of them before but that show turned me into a fan.
