stp's version of Dancing Days has to be the best remake EVER!!!!! i would also put GNR's version of Hair of The Dog as one of the best as well..anybody else??

Kind of a random post, considering that remake came out in like 96ish, but I'm behind you Opiated, it's really good. The CD that is on, Encomium, is all together quite good. If you don't have it, I suggest you pick it up. My favorite remake of all time is pretty obscure, but in my mind significant. Some random UK bands got together a while back and did a Pink Floyd tribute album called A Saucerful of Pink and it has some not so good songs on it - but Melting Euphoria's remake of Floyd's Point Me At the Sky is amazing. I absolutely love it. Also, Sky Cries Mary's remake of Wots Uh The Deal (on the same disk) is spectacular.
And on another note, I saw in the other thread that your birthday is 6/16 - mine is as well - small but notable conincidence. I'm going to try to make it to the free show in Pittsburgh on my way to Lewiston the next day. We'll see...

well it's nice to meet a fellow june 16ther!!!! yeah..i had a few drinks last night, and threw on that cd..hadn't heard it in a long time, and you know when you've had a few drinks you just sort of throw these things out there!!! :thumb:

Even though it's a live cover, I think its aweosme when Pearl Jam does Baba O' Riley. I have a great version of it from the Las Vegas 2000 bootleg. And even though its old I think the best cover ever is Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower.

No worries, and I hope I didn't come off as the "Search Police" because I have always been on the other side of the fence as them. I just knew this felt familiar and low and behold the search feature actually worked for me.

Do they have another version of War Pigs other than the live version on Nativity in Black? I thought that version was an insult to the Godfathers of metal. He doesn't even remember all of the words and just starts singing "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah."
Nativity in Black would have been the perfect tribute album if they had just left off Faith No More and Type O Negative.

There's a studio version on their CD "the Real Thing", it's great, very much note for note though

When Thornley toured last year they did covers of Zeppelin songs often, particularly Immigrant Song, it kicked ass.
Oasis does a mean cover of My Generation and Helter Skelter as well.

Not to be a knob, but I've never been too pleased with any Zeppelin covers I've ever heard. STP's Dancing Days is a decent rendition, but it falls short of Zep, IMO....and therefore....pretty useless to me.
I like covers that either put a different spin on the song without destroying it (like Yonder Mountain String Band's bluegrass adaptation of J.J. Cale's If You're Ever in Oklahoma) or improve the song altogether (like Led Zeppelin [Jimmy Page] achieved with the masterful rearrangement of Joan Baez' Babe I'm Gonna Leave You), or simply replicate the original but cleans up or enhances the sound or texture via improved recording technology or better sounding instruments (like Stevie Ray Vaughn's superb update of the Jimi Hendix scorcher Voodoo Child)
EDIT: And as long as I'm speaking of SRV does Hendrix, his instrumental version of Little Wing is one of the best showcases of guitar playing I've ever heard.
On the topic, has there ever been an overlooked songwriter who has had more compositions spiced up in covers than J.J. Cale? Somebody mentioned J.J. in the guitarist thread I believe...and I absolutely love the smooth, understated bluesy tone of his songs; and while his writing is superb, it's almost as if his recordings beg for enhancement. Lynnard Skynnard (They Call Me the Breeze), Eric Clapton (Cocaine & After Midnight), Widespread Panic (Travelin' Light), Brother Phelps (Anyway the Wind Blows), Waylon Jennings (Louisiana Woman), Santana (The Sensitive Kind), Deep Purple (Magnolia), The Band (Crazy Mama).... and those are just the ones I can think of....
