a band that gets little to no recognition...for me it would be Gomez...album after album of consistent, bluesy, eclectic, brilliant music...and one of the greatest live acts i've ever seen
If you could make everybody hear one band...

what's elbow like?? if you wanna get a feel for what gomez is like live, they have a live CD/DVD called Out West..great stuff..they do some Tom Waits as well!! i've seen them do Rock n Roll by zeppelin, and Road to Nowhere bye the talking heads which was hypnotic in its glory

Thanks for alerting me to Out West. I'll have to check that out. As for Elbow, boy, not sure how to label them. All Music Guide lists some of their contemporaries as:
Travis
Radiohead
Starsailor
Catherine Wheel
Doves
I don't agree with the Travis comparison, but I can see elements of the other bands in their sound. I think I'd call it a mix of Catherine Wheel and the Doves. I really like Elbow, but I don't know a single other person who listens to them.

The Hummers, from Winnipeg. I haven't seen these guys since I left Saskatoon in 2000, but based on their first 2 albums, and their killer live show, I will still say they are a hidden gem.
I've never been good at classifying music, but if I had to, I'd say these guys would be acid jazz. They have a horn section, drums, bongo player, keyboardist, guitarist, bass, and a dj scratching. First time I saw them was at a music festival in northern Saskatchewan, and they took the stage last at around 1:00 am. They played for a few hours in the hot weather, and everything about that performance was stellar. The scenery was amazing, the crowd was grooving, the band was feeding off everyones energy...it's a favorite memory for sure.
I believe they are back together and possibly touring, so if they happen to be anywhere near you, do yourself the favor.

Other than that, I'd go with Thornley, known well in Canada, probably not at all in the U.S or UK. I think their album rocks big time, and they put on great live shows. Personally I think if you put Big Wreck and Thornley's music together and look at it as one (which I do) its pretty damn awesome imo.

I just love this band - their live shows are amazing.
A jam band that can play the crap out of their instruments.
I guess I would compare them to Phish, although I do not like Phish.

My vote is for a local (Ottawa) band called The Polytones... <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thepolytones.com">www.thepolytones.com</a><!-- w -->. They're a five piece band which is fronted by a female lead singer, and they've also got a female drummer.
It's Pop Music...so it's a little lighter than what most are exposed to, but I recommend that you check out their website and listen to their latest songs from the new album, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
They're slowly climbing the charts across Canadian College radio....if you like what you hear, put in a request at your local radio station.
This is a fantastic thread btw Opiated. I look forward to checking out everyones picks.

Halifax pumped out another great band called The Flashing Lights, unfortunately they're no longer together. If you can still get your hands on a disc it would definitely be worth your time to give it a spin.
