Every year it seems more and more movies that weren't in wide release are nominated. Personally, I would love to see "Crash" rip it up.

I'm somewhat surprised that Walk The Line was not nominated for Best Picture. I'm pulling for Crash and Munich.

However Brokeback mountain...I'm sick of hearing about these two gay cowboys.

IMO, Walk the Line did not deserve a Best Picture nomination. It was a fantastic movie, but not at that certain status that Best Picture needs to be. I will be surprised if Phoenix gets best actor. Reese, on the other hand deserves Best Supporting Actress, too bad the categories aren't lined up that way. It will be tough for that to go over as Best in a Lead.

I'm surprised that "A History of Violence" didn't get more nominations. Cronenberg definitely deserved a best director nod for that one, as did Viggo Mortensen in the lead role. It's cool that William Hurt got nominated though. He was fantastic in that flick.

i agree with that. for me, it was the best picture i've seen this year. i've seen all the nominees, and i think munich was the only one that i liked almost as much as walk the line. crash was good, but the other nominees were a little overrated...just my opinion.

i hope that at least phoenix and witherspoon win for best performances.

I saw Crash today for the first time. Man, what an incredible movie. I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, but my first impression is that this movie deserved Best Picture. It's unusual that the Academy gets it right.

Couldn't agree with you more. When I first saw Crash, I was captivated from start to finish. It is rare that the Academy shares the same view. Now I haven't seen Brokeback yet either but I think it would be pretty hard to top that.

Crash is a terrific flick. That being said, Brokeback is also terrific, and to me, breaks a ton of new ground that needed to be broken...pun inteneded I guess. Although Crash was excellent and done very well, to me it wasn't anything new or original.

The one thing that I didn't understand was why Heath ledger was the one up for the oscar, and the one getting all the hype. I thought Jake Glynthal(sp?) did a much, much better job, and thusly his character was much more real. Still, a powerful movie on many levels.

I think Gyllenhaal deserved more recognition as a supporting actor in the role, but in the end, i'm pretty sure the academy was right by awarding Phil S. Hoffman for best actor. In my opinion both Heath and Gyllenhaal gave great performances in tough roles to fill.

After seeing both Crash and Brokeback Mtn. a couple time now, I think Brokeback was more deserving of the oscar. Crash had some unique writing, but it just wasn't groundbreaking stuff to me. It was also too overtly politically aimed for my tastes(although the message was clear and important).

Brokeback told a specific story. so it's simpler compared to Crash. There were no breakthrough conventions as far as film goes(actually, the pacing seemed a bit off to me). The story was it's redeeming feature. I had completely different views about homosexuality and society after seeing the movie than before.

Brokeback Mountain relied on the "shock" factor of homosexuality. Some deep writing: a guy who has an affair. How original.
