I got laid off on Monday. I had been at this job, as an Architectural Technologist, since last August, and as far as I knew everything was going very well. Unbeknownst to me, the projected workload that I was hired to handle just hasn't materialized. I was so shocked and pissed off because not only did I get screwed out of this job, but my employer lured me over from a great job I had as an estimator for a construction company. I've gotten over the shock and anger, and now I am at the move on stage.
Here's the crux of this email. To the Hipbasers in Calgary, I am wondering if you guys have any connections to construction companies, architects, designers, that sort of thing, that could use a draftsperson. I've got 4ish years commercial construction experience, drafting, estimating, and project coordinating.
I've sent out probably 30 resumes already and I have an interview tomorrow afternoon. I'm not concerned about finding work, it's finding the right company where I am a good fit.

Not that I'm going to be of any help to you - but I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am. That happened to my ex and it was just such a damn shock. I think that was the worst part....anyway, best of luck to you. Here's to finding something better!

Sorry dude - the only connection I have to the construction industry is the fact that we just had a house built. But given the economy here I'm sure it won't take you long to find the ideal fit.

sorry to hear you lost your job. but you live in calgary. i think a blind monkey could find work out there.
my advice would be to take any job you can get. you can always quit when something better comes along

i suggested getting any job right away for the simple reason that you have to have some sort of income. a man can't live on EI alone

Oh you definitely don't want to take any job and just quit. When you're in a select industry everyone knows each other and your rep gets around. I live in a one-trick town and I have to be very careful about how I work if I want to keep working in the top respected companies.
I work in the auto industry and we're laying off like CRAZY. A year ago we had almost 350 employees and right now we're down to 250. The past 3 Fridays in a row has seen layoffs for us- we joking refer to ourselves as "Survivor-OTC" now. (OTC is our company's name in an acronym)
I've made it through round 3, but it's getting hard to see my friends leave...
Best of luck! I had a month off between this job and my last, and it was some of the most stressful days of my life. It just doesn't feel right to not work...

Not to steal the thunder from your post, Billy, but I understand where you are coming from.
I was let go myself due to "restructuring"... I guess that's the new code word in business for downsizing. It's been almost 3 months now, I guess. I did get a decent severance package, and if things continue to not work out in the next couple months I can always move back in with my parents, so I'm not in a desperate situation. Still, it's getting frustrating not having work for so long. I've had my fair share of interviews both before and after the holidays, but have just come up short.
One challenge I face is my career profile is fairly narrow. I'm highly educated in my profession (accounting), but my career background has all been in real estate, for only 2 different companies. I've chosen to try and find an accounting management job in a service industry other than real estate, just because I want something different. This all limits me to some extent, but it's what I want, so I'm focusing my energies there. So, like I said, it's frustrating, but at least I'm getting interviews, so something's bound to break for me soon.
On the chance that any Hipbaser from between Toronto to London can help me or hears of any potential accounting management career opportunities, just send me a PM or an e-mail. Thanks all.
And good luck to you Billy... sounds like you'll be OK soon. It's more important in the grand scheme of things that you find work, because you have a family to worry about, whereas I just have to look out for myself. Anyway, I'm sure we'll both be back working soon.

Well I recieved two offers today, both are fantastic. One is with a large architecture/engineering/design firm, and the other is with the Calgary Health Region. I'm going to take the health region one because there is absolutely no overtime nor any expected, I get 4 weeks holidays plus 5 earned days off per year, the benefits package is incredible, and the job and workplace seem pretty relaxed. The other job would have been great too, but I'm just at a different place in life with a daughter and all.
J-Monster, if you're ever thinking about coming out west, now's the time to do it. I have noticed a shit load of accounting related job postings. Good luck man!

This might be a little late, but i've got a connection in Calgary. I used to work for & my family are great friends with Caliber Systems Inc. They are a fairly large heavy construction outfit; pipefitting, dirt, oil leases... If you're still looking, i can give you some contacts. I'm tight with the owner, he let me rip around in his 911 a couple of times, & he has a hot daughter.
