So what is the deal with the cap if some unforeseen tragedy befalls a team mid-season? EG: Detroit and Jiri Fischer.

If the guy is never gonna play again, or is killed, what is the deal with the cap? Does his salary still count towards the cap?

I would think the team would be granted an exception but I'm not up on those things. I don't think an inactive player counts towards the cap though. I don't think Cloutier takes up Vancouver's cap while he is on IR.

Tiger is right - the salary of a guy on IR doesn't count against the cap.
