I figured I would post this in here for all the torrent users.

Some of you in Ontario, who use Rogers for their internet service, may have noticed that their bitorrent transfer rates have slowed to a snail's pace lately. This happened to me. Whereas I was once able to transfer at speeds of upto 200 kb/s, I suddenly found myself transferring at 2 kb/s. The reason for this is that Rogers is now throttling all P2P applications. What that means is Rogers is capping transfer rates for all P2P programs, including torrents, DC++, Morpheus and the like. :x

If you are having problems with your bitorrent client, the solution is to set your port to 1720. Make sure you also forward port 1720 in your firewall program. I'll assume that y'all know how to do this.

I haven't come across a solution yet for other P2P programs, but if I do, I'll post it here.

Yeah, it really sucks. Not only do they cap the amount you can upload/download (60GBs/m), but they also limit the speed at which you can transfer. Talk about getting doubly screwed.

I suspect that it has something to do with their digital phone service. They have sunk millions of $ into it. Apparently, the digital phone service runs on the same lines as the internet service. So, if people are clogging up the internet with high bandwith usage, then it interferes with the didgital phone service.

Either way, right now my only solution is to switch ISPs.

Ok. Looks like port 1529 also works.

Most ports will work, just not the standard 6881 - 6889. I've had the best success using ports between 50000 & 60000.

New versions of Bit Torrent software will cloke the packets of info, and the ISPs won't be able to do anything... again. As well, most new Bit Torrent clients support DHT (if yours doesn't, try Azureus) - this allows you to access Bit Torrents without accessing a tracker site...

Gonna give this a little bump because....

If your ISP is engaging in traffic shaping, such as Rogers does, you can enable protocol encryption for utorrent and azureus.

Or you could switch ISPs & go to one that doesn't (as of yet) shape bandwidth, nor have then capped monthly traffic. I left Rogers & signed up with 3web.ca's DSL service. I get the same download speeds & higher upload speeds as I did with Rogers, and for $30/month.

That is strange, because I have 2 windows computers & a Mac behind my router, all sharing my 3web internet connection.....

Sympatico also says that their wireless home networking is not Mac compatible, but I have 2 Macs both connected with their wireless router/modem...

That sucks! With my Sympatico connection I normally reach my max download speed of 5Mbits ~ 500k/s. If that drops to less than 100 with Rogers, I am really going to be pissed!

I was getting speeds better than 90kbps with Rogers, and my upload was about 40kbps. When the bandwidth shaping technology hit me, I couldn't download more than 15kbps, and couldn't upload more than 2kbps. With 3web, I've been getting the full 300kbps frequently, and can upload at the full 80kbps. They offer cable internet at speeds of upto 6Mb/s, but since they are resellers of Rogers network, I didn't know if the bandwidth shaping would effect 3web cable internet as well. That's why I switched to DSL.
