as thursday marks the 25th anniversary of his murder it's amazing to see how popular he and the beatles still are. there will never be anything like them again. I get requests at work for beatles songsd from kids who are barely 13. i often wonder how the musical landscape would be today if he hadn't died..that asshole mark chapman can rot in hell..but anyways..my lennon lyric i can't get out of my mind right now is

if you ever get a chance to listen to the Beatles anthology 2, there's an evolution of strawberry fields forever, starting with john and just his guitar from a home demo...it's beautiful

the great thing about How do you sleep, besides the fact that it's aimed at Paul, is that George Harrison is playing lead guitar..so john wasn't the only one who thought paul was a prick

we miss you John, thanks for all the music i've had numerous talks with ppl in their 40's and so on about that day, i couldnt even 'imagine' what it was like (i was five years old at the time) but they honestly all say that they we're shocked & cried for weeks, with no shame about it all

Yes, he did. I tried to see if anyone had that White Ribbon performance where Gord did "Oh Yoko" and "The Hideout" (Sarah Harmer tune) but I got no responses.

I'll never forget that date as long as I live. I was four years old, and my dad was working nights at the old York Farms plant in Brantford, ON. The next morning mom bundled up my sis (who was 2) and I and drove out to pick up dad from work.

Dad was 30 at the time, and had grown up living and breathing everything Beatles. They were the reason he learned to play guitar and started playing in a band, and when I look at old photos of him he had the same Beatle-mania inspired mop cut that thousands of other kids did in the 60's. Some of my earliest memories are of dad, playing his 33's on the stereo, putting his big headphones on my ears so I could hear what he was listening to. What I heard was the Beatles, and to this day hearing a note or two from a song will take me back to those days - days spent in youthful innocence, priceless time shared between father and son.

When dad got in the car that morning, mom told him that Lennon had been killed last night. Dad cried.

There is nothing as memorable as the first time you see your parents as humans... see them without the mask of "mom" or "dad, but as real people, vulnerable, subject to things beyond their control. I think kids think parents are somehow invincible, as though their position of authority extends beyond the family into the world order around them. Maybe that's why it left such a mark on me, seeing my dad cry for the first time in my life. As a four year old I knew I cried all the time, but I somehow thought parents, especially dads, were beyond that.

With my whole view of the world order now in chaos, I remember sitting very still and quiet in the back seat, asking very hesitantly "Who is John Lennon?" I will never forget dad's answer: "He was a very nice man, and he made music."

It wasn't until some time later that I made the connection between John Lennon and the sounds that came from those headphones, but when I did I could begin to understand some of dad's grief. Looking back, he did make music... and the world was robbed of an incredible gift that night.
